Newbie with questions

Newbie with questions

2005-02-04 by slogancola

I have a microkontrol and it works fine in other programs. When I use
the setup assistant in Logic it does not see the drivers- or, I can't
figure out where to go to check and see it.

I am in the process of learning logic pro 7 right now, but I can't get
sound. Having no indication that logic is noticing the driver makes it
harder for me to figure out what the next step is.

I am reading the keys on screen (c# for example) but it says no in/ no
out when I am not hitting them, and there is a slash through the notes.
I am thinking that if it registers the notes I am playing then it must
acknowledge the driver-but, I do not want to make any assumptions.

If this is an indication that everything is going well, then what
would be the next step?

One gent on another forum suggested "Shift select the amount of tracks
you want to record, and set the record path on your hard drive and
go." What does shift selecting and setting record path on hard entail?
Would this refer to action in the environment window? If so, is there
a link that can help? I went to the Apple store and a gent showed me
how to set up a midicontrol, but he wasn't very familiar with Logic
and thus my intensive notes are useless.

I have spent some long boring nights staring at the user manuals and
several opening chapters of live tutorials, and while I have a very
good understanding now of binary numbers, and what things represent, I
have not been able to apply, thus remember anything- because I just
can't seem to get through the initial steps, and tutorials don't seem
to cover it. I am skipping something very important and I have been
for months. I will bake a cake for whoever gives me the help I have
been needing since november-it will go great with a latte!

Thanks!

Did you run the audio-midi utility first to make your system see your audio interface?

Re: Newbie with questions

Yeah, thanks for the reply!
I just checked it again and the audio midi setup sees my microkontrol.
Will this suffice? Does this guarantee that Logic 7 sees it?
If it does, and I seeing as though I already ran the preferences-logic
setup assistant, can I proceed to try and make a sound, and if so what
do I do next?

1. first check the audio-midi setup under the audio tab to make sure its there.
2. in logic, go to Audio >; Audio Hardware (or something like that) and choose your device there.
3. Go to the arrange page of logic, choose an audio track, and try hitting pause and record on that track and see if the meter moves. if not, try holding down the mouse on that track and choosing an audio track.

Re: Newbie with questions

I did not see it under the audio-midi tab, and while my tascam fw1884
is showing under audio driver, I have nothing under mide for drivers.
I ran setup assistant again but when it got to midi it did not list my
korg microkontrol. It did however ask me if I wanted to add any midi
devives to the empty list but I was not sure the technical way of
entering, or if it was appropriate.
Thanks again for your time! I really want to get this solved.
The drivers must be installed since I have been using this with Live
for a couple months. I did notice that my korg (mkontrol) is LED'ing
LIVE. Perhaps this is causing an interference, but I don't believe so.
I specifically got this controller to try and test out Logic's midi
after having limited results setting up audio with my tascam.
Boy do I just want to start actually using this software!

See if your korg came with a CD with drivers, or go to their website to see if you can download the drivers for your device. Then do the steps I mentioned.

Re: Newbie with questions

I checked their website and while there are several options for pc
drivers, all that the OSX has in terms of options are files called
librarian.
I loaded the cd rom and there was no seperate driver file. I am in the
process of reading the manual right now. Perhaps I need to establish a
link between Logic and the librarian software.
If nothing else, I will call korg when I wake up.

The Korg apparently uses OSX's built in mididriver automatically.
This makes it a little harder for me to understand why it isn't
showing up- no wait a second it also presents a reason why it might
not be showing up. I think I'm more confused.

I am not familiar with that device, but its possible for the same device to show up in the midi and the audio sections. i am using emagic's amt8 midi interface - and that shows up in my midi drivers, but the individual keyboards do not - they are seen by the amt8, and i access them in Logic by creating multi-instruments and assigning to the correct ports.

Every audio interface must show up in the midi-audio util somehow to be used. does that unit have an audio interface? does it allow you to hook a microphone up to it, and then record audio? if its only got some 1/4 cables to play a sound to an amp, then that is not an audio interface - thats just an output like any keyboard has.

I am guessing that it might have a USB interface too - to use the control part - but I think those commands are midi.

Re: Newbie with questions

2005-02-04 by slogancola

Thanks, and good guess.
It has a USB interface.Unfortunately it has no audio. It is simply a
midi controller.
I just tried to contact Korg but waited to to the point of no
connection. I hate that.
Meanwhile I got this post from another gent on osxaudio:

"It sounds like Logic is seeing the MIDI messages from the
microkontrol. It is supposed to say No In when you aren't playing MIDI
notes and No Out when there are no MIDI notes being sent from Logic.
And since you made no mention of a MIDI tone generator, you should
always expect to see No Out.

The slash through the note means the last message Logic received was a
Note Off. If you press a MIDI key and hold it down, you'll see a note
without a slash."

It sounds like it sees it, but I still feel it is important that logic
adresses it by name-am I wrong?

Did you create a midi multi instrument on the environment page? I think you need to do that, and set the port to USB. Then on the arrange page, when you choose a midi track, there are some menu items in the parameters in the channel strip which allow you to choose that if its going to produce sound. Normally you would set the korg to be transmit midi and then use that for other synths and soft synths. I have one keyboard a number of modules and soft synths. Logic knows which module to sound because of what arrange track I am on.

Thank you very much,
When I get back tommorrow I will try out what you suggested.
I can't wait to use this software!

Hi. This is probably ridiculous to suggest, but I run a Novation Speedio usb audio
interface with a G5 and for a while I had a similar non recog. problem, until I realised that
with some usb gear and Logic you can't have it connected when you boot up your system.
Strange, but I have to plug my interface in once my desktop's up and then boot Logic.
Perhaps it's a Novation driver thing. My Evolution controller on the other hand is
recognised immediately. Another possibly ridiculous suggestion - make sure your
instrument track is armed to record. Sorry if this is silly, but the number of times I've been
stymied by elementary things is astonishing.
Good luck.

Re: Newbie with questions

I got it to work!
I made my first note today in Logic! Wooh-hoo (in a Homer Simpson voice!)

I have no idea why it doesn't identify the microkontrol by name, but
once I rebooted without the usb connected it told me an audio device
was no longer attached. With this information I tried arming the track
but I still had no sound, so I read the manual. Went between several
index leaps, and found the mysterious "hold down" mouse button for
available instruments. I feel like I just opened up the first layer of
a Hellraiser cube- one small step for man, one giant leap for my kind!

Thank you George for your help and bloodychoir for your helpful
suggestions!
