front suspension

2002-06-11 by dbarton62

Hey Guys,
Does anyone know if we use the factory GT6 toe-in, camber and
castor settings or did Marcos tweek them to suit his own geometry.
Also I understand that the factory windshield is a pricey piece
mine is very badly scratched to the point where polishing it would
really distort the glass........would it be possible to use a lexan
or plexiglass .......are they legal, the rear window I understand is
already lexan.......do the plastics scratch easy.......are they
flexible enough to accept the compound curves without distorting or
cracking.......any ideas????
   Cheers Dave #5577

Hi Dave,

As far as I know, the GT6 front suspension settings should be used. I'd like
to have that confirmed myself because I need to have an adjustment due to
uneven tire wear.

I'm pretty sure the front windshield has to be modern safety glass. When I
replaced mine last year, I wanted a tinted version similar to what I had
originally but the law appears to have changed. I could have a top tint but
not the double anti-sun bronze tint. The cost of my new windshield was less
than 200 pounds, FOB the factory, but I don't recall the exact amount.

The rear screens were available in glass through the Marcos Owners Club but
I'm not sure if they still are. Colin Feyerabend, who used to run the club,
helped acquire the front screens for both my coupe and Ron McLeod's Mantis
last year from Pilkington Glass in England and he secured my glass rear
screen for me back in 1980 when my car was rebuilt following a fire. I have
had both the plexiglass and the glass versions on my car and can state
unequivocally that the glass rear screen is VASTLY superior. I'd suggest you
contact Colin to determine if the glass rear screen are still available. In
1980, the cost was around 85 pounds, if I recall correctly.

You can get the parts from Marcos Heritage spares but you'll pay a hugely
inflated price.

Hope this helps.

RE: [MarcosManiacs] Re: front suspension

2002-06-11 by pauldransfield@iname.com

Hi Dave,

I figured you'd ask but I don't have the number with me at work today. I'm
in New York during the week. I might be able to dig it out this evening but
it may be the weekend before I can get back to you unless some other kind
soul has it handy. If you have the last copy of Torque magazine (Marcos
Owners Club), Ron McLeod wrote up our glass replacement experience with all
the contact names, numbers and costs. The glass itself isn't that expensive
but the cost of crating, shipping, taxes and customs clearance didn't leave
much change out of CAN$1000 in total. If you get both front and rear screens
shipped together, it wouldn't cost much more than shipping just one. Ron and
I saved ourselves quite a bit by splitting the shipping costs.

I'll get back to you when I have the information.

Regards,
        Paul

Dave
I have not researched your question but, I don't think Plexiglas is
street legal. All the custom/kit cars use safety plate to get through Ca
DMV registration. If you can fine a source at a good price, I'm sure
several of us would have interest.

Dave,

My 1969 Maintenance Manual for the Marcos 3-Litre lists: Castor = 6
degrees, Camber= nil, Toe-in = 1/16" to 1/8"

Hope that helps!

RE: [MarcosManiacs] Re: front suspension

2002-06-12 by pauldransfield@iname.com

Hi Dave,

You're in luck. Not only do I have Colin Feyerabend's phone number, I also
have the last copy of Torque magazine with me.

Colin's work number is (they're 5 hours ahead):- 01144 181 460 3511
His email address is :- abs.labs@...

From past experience, it was FAR better to phone him than to try and get him
to respond to an email. He should be able to let you know off the top of his
head whether the glass rear screens are still available. The front screen,
with a blue top tint, cost me only 159 pounds as opposed to the 375 pounds
that Rory McMath charges. Big difference, eh! The cost of pickup, recrating
of two screens and transportation to Toronto via ship was 262 pounds.
Brokers fees, taxes and warehouse fees at this end were CAN$226. So you can
see, the windshield is not the biggest expense.

Your biggest problem is to light a fire under Colin. He's a great guy but
comes across as totally disorganized. Also, Pilkington glass generally don't
keep windshields in stock and I had to wait quite some time for them to get
around to making them. I also hear that the glass rear screens are a pig to
make, so there's a chance that they've stopped making them.

The shipping agent was:- Partimex Trading International - Contact
name is Stan Hilton
Unit 14, Wilds Yard, Station Road,
				Cullompton, Devon, (just
outside Exeter)
				EX15 1BQ

				Phone:- 01144 1884 35522

They did an excellent job with recrating, which added somewhat to the cost,
but they insisted on doing it for insurance coverage purposes and wouldn't
have taken on the job otherwise. The screens arrived in perfect condition.

A word of warning regarding installation. The rear screen in particular is
tricky to install and many have been broken in the attempt. Whoever does the
installation had better know what they're doing.

When you contact Colin, it may help if you mention my name because I've been
interfacing with Colin in one way or another for over 20 years,.

Good luck.

Re: [MarcosManiacs] Re: front suspension

2002-06-12 by Mike Denman

Hi Dave,
I have recently (in the past two years) bought both a windshield and a glass rear screen for my Marcos 1800. The windshield I bought from Heritage spares (Rory McMath) and the shipping to the USA, packaging, freight forwarding and storage waiting for customs at the S.F. airport was twice the price of the windshield. Rory was able to ship the windshield rather quickly. The box it was shipped in was costly but very protective.
The rear screen (glass) I bought from the Marcos Owners Club. It seemly took forever to get... about 8 months if memory serves. Jac Myers, a fellow 1800 owner, was absolutely instrumental in getting it built and shipped. He called and expedited and generally took charge of making it happen for me. When he shipped the rear glass it came to my "door step" and I didn't have to pay freight forwarding etc. It was still expensive but not as expensive as the windshield and it was more convenient.

Paul,
Thanks very much ...I will contact Colin tomorrow get pricing etc
.. if there are other guys who need glass we can see what we can sort
out as a package deal....the 8 months wait is not an issue for me
anymore as my procrastination has put me back to next spring as a
finished date for my car.

Re: front suspension

Count me in for a glass rear screen (assuming it's a similar price to
that quoted before).

Cheers,

Mark

PS I seem to recall they were available only for collection from
someone in Charlton (East London) - Perhaps it was Colin, himself.

Re: front suspension

Don, is this the maintenance manual that someone was going to
Scan/Acrobat-ise? If so, has any progress been made towards that.

I'd love to have a copy.

Cheers,

Mark

Mark,

Different manual. This is for the 1969 v6. It lists all the specs
(engine, trans, etc.) capacities.....

If you email me your address off-post I'll send you a copy. Aren't many
of the V6s' over here although some of the specs would be for other cars
also. Anyone else, let me know. I'll also send to Jeff for posting on
the site.

Hello Larry and others,

Thanks to your photos and drawings with dimensions from Rory, the front suspension brackets have now been re and re’d back closer to spec.

The car must have been in an accident before I got it, though there is no other sign of damage. That still does not explain how someone could bodge a repair so badly that the front wheels could not steer. The ways of the world are oft baffling. I’m send along some photos of the current look which is far better than the earlier photos I sent you.

So thank you muchly.

All the best,

Danny
