Just got a reply from the Marconi Museum in Tustin, CA. They have the Marcos that was restored here in Willits, CA back in the late 80's and sold at a Rick Cole auction in 1989. It is an early 1800 with the DeDion independant rear suspension. So the mystery is solved........... Don Lattimer #3m5759 Willits, CA USA

Just received another email from the Marconi Museum and the DeDion IRS car they have is serial #4043. That confuses things a bit. If Jem said that 33 were made with the DeDion then some in the first 50 or so had to have live rear axles. Starting serial # would probably be 4001. Oh well, I'll keep digging for more info. Hi Don, It's apparent that the serial numbers were not all used consecutively for similar models. It would be interesting to see an explanation of serial number designations because they've never made any sense to me. I wonder if Rory would know. They could have been making gull-wing racers at the same time as producing the 1800s, and they probably didn't start the 1800s at 4001. Maybe there's an article in one of the older Marcos Owners Club magazines on the subject. I'll take a look if I get any free time. By the way, after a lot of soul searching and hand wringing, I've opted to go for a set of 17 x 7 RHINO wheels with a 4x4.25 PCD from Centerline Wheels. They are 19 lb, 2 piece, rotary forged, billet aluminum wheels with a high polished finish, offered direct through the overstocked wheels section on their website at $134 apiece plus $70 shipping. There are some 15" and 16" wheels available in that section but very few with a 4" or less backspace. When I measured the available space, the front limitation for me is the position of the heater air intake hose but I can fix that by tighening the retaining strap. My rear limitation is on tire size because the wheel arches are not centred over the wheels. I imagine that could be caused by the body being mounted slightly forward on the chassis. With smaller 185/70R13 tires fitted when my car was restored, they probably figured it didn't matter enough to adjust it. I'm still mulling over tire size, but I'm leaning towards 205/45R17 tires on the front and 215/45R17 tires on the rear, if they'll fit. I thought I'd have plenty of room but when I measured my current temporary 175/80R13s on the rear, their diameter is around 1/2" less than the original Avons. The 185/70R13s are smaller than spec as well so that would explain why my speedo was over-reading so much with those on the rear. When I get everything figured out and fitted, I'll send in an updated photo. Regards, Paul Dransfield 3 litre Volvo

Hi Don, based on Saxby`s "chassis numbers" you will find the chassis No´s: 4001-4099 1964-1966 99 1800GT (IRS + Live Axled) For the "GT" the chassis No´s start with 4001. So the number 4043 does not fit with 33 build live axle Marcos. Perhaps Rory.uk can give information for the No. 4043.
