oil pan

2004-11-22 by Meggsief@aol.com

Hey all,
Ever notice when you drive hard through a corner the racket the
pistons make? Is there an oil pan or gravity based pump that is available for
the 1600 cortina engines. Have any of you guys ran into this if so how did you
cure it besides over filling the oil. On a litter note.... I got into a bit of
a race through some hairy corners with an old sedan Alfa. I killed him in the
corners but his horse power kept closing up my lead, then of all things my
throttle stuck wide open. The beautiful thing about an old car is that when you
turn off the ignition you can still steer and brake. So I started the car up
in 2nd quickly into 4th hit 65mph turn off car. Repeat sequnce all the way back
home. Traffic lights and stop sighns were tricky though. All in all now that
its back in my garage a funny experience!

Hi Hal,
When I rebuilt my engine a few years ago, I welded a baffle plate across the sump well to keep the oil from slodshing out and to keep the pump submerged in the oil during hard cornering. It appears to work very well because I've never had any problems using that arrangement.

The pan in my 1600 also has a plate and baffels to
keep the oil going in the right places. Now if I can
just keep the exhaust pipes from falling off. Having a
problem getting in and out of my garage. The clamp
strap behind the header pipe catches on the garage
floor because of the angle of the garage apron. I am
thinking about running either a side exhaust or
instead of using a single tube system, make a splitter
that then runs two smaller diameter pipes under the
car and have them come out on either side of the spare
tire buldge in the rear.

paul,
I was under the impresion that if the baffles were not put in the
exact location it would not work properly. If that is the case do you have an out
line of how and where you layed yours in.

Hi Hal,
The baffle plate was laid across the top of the sump well with a hole for the oil pump and another small one for the dip stick. Oil flows in through a gap at the rear. The baffle prevents the oil from being slung to the side or front under hard cornering or braking. I got the details from one of the Swedish members of the Marcos Owners Club. He's done a lot of racing in his time using a bored out Volvo B30 engine, the same as the one I have.

Hal,

It is important to cure oil surge in the sump of these engines. When we
raced them in the 1960's Cosworth Engineering supplied a sump which had
a horizontal baffle with a slot in the middle to allow the oil to
return. The baffle should be at the level of the full mark on the
dipstick. It is very effective and easy to make.

thank you John, I was hoping someone who had raced had a suggestion the
winter just isn't long enough to finish my laundry list of tasks.

Hal,

One thing I forgot to mention was that you need to extend the oil pick
up with a gauze faced box to the middle of the sump so that oil is
collected under both braking and acceleration. Whist you are about it
you could consider fitting an oil temperature gauge take off in the sump
at the same time.

I raced my Marcos very successfully in 1961, winning all the qualifying
rounds of the Autosport Championship and taking the Championship too.
In 1963 I was 2nd at the Nurburgring in the 500 km race. I have written
about it on www.motorsnippets.com <http://www.motorsnippets.com/> and
this is in the Features section. Have a look.

I am currently trying to trace my car which was last advertised in Road
& Track in California in 1971. It was the first car sold to a member of
the public. I had to build it myself as Jem Marsh was no help and did
not think I was capable of winning races. Maybe one needs that sort of
incentive to prove people wrong.

Best wishes,

John
