Rescuing a 1600 GT for restoration.

Rescuing a 1600 GT for restoration.

2006-03-08 by marcos1600

Finally gave up and re-registered for this board as Yahoo would not recognize my old
pass-word.

I recently bought a 1600 GT that is in need of full restoration, despite the former owner
stating he had spent about $25,000 on it around 1980.
I have no idea where his money went, the car seems to need everything, even allowing for
it's having sat for the past 25 years I do not see what he got for his money beyond the
overweight Jap engine.

If I can get it running with the current Mazzzzdaaaaa rotary I will, until I can complete the
build up of a "warm" Alfa-Romeo 2000 to put in it.
I have to hope the "restorer" who put the Mazda in did not butcher the chassis to do so.

So I will be scrounging for parts.

The main items I will be looking for are a new windshield, and a set of wheels to replace
the 8 spoke Minilite's that are on it.
I would rather have the original wheels, or a wire wheel conversion.

I know I will have to go through the brakes completely.
I am hoping the chassis is OK, but expect it to need major work after sitting outside for so
long in an area with high humidity as it is near open water, it is also an area that gets lots
of rain every year.

Rumor has it that there is another Marcos owner on this board who has "an Italian engine"
in his car. I would like more detail on that conversion.

Hi There,
Welcome to Marcos ownership. I have no idea what the previous owner could
have spent that money on given the condition it is in. I have most of the
parts you need including a windscreen and a complete set of original wheels.
What year is the car? I can source most parts for all but the very early pre
Adams cars and carry most of the parts in stock. Go look at the
'marcospartsusa' wwebsite and send me an E mail if you want any other parts.

Garry Diver

PS I also have a 1981 Marcos with a Ford 2.8 which is complete but needs
restoration. But that will have to wait till I have finished the Mantaray.

1968 1600 GT, wood chassis.
I do not have the chassis number yet.

How much for a windscreen?
Who made it?

How much for a set of correct wheels?

Richard,

Great to hear another 1600GT is being revived. My
1600GT is number 5179, real close to your number. It
would be interresting to see how similarly they are
built. Let me know if you need any reference pictures
to help assemble your car.

Hi, I am old alfisti that resently bought a 1600 marcos with chassi
number #5178, the car after yours Bob and only a few after yours
Richard. My car is i near mint condition but has been club raced in
Sweden on and of the last years. About your conversion plans for a
Alfa Nord engine i think you maby will have a problem with engine
hight. You will probably ned a dry sump convertion for your engine.
For a aluminum engin the alfa engin i one heavy piece.... It will
probably weigh 30-40 kilos more then the crossflow ford engine. But
it is a nice engin that will give you lodes of torque and without any
problem 160-170 usable bhp.

Alfa engine in a Marcos.

If he could do it, so can I.
I will probably have to use a narrow type oil pan.

Hi again. You are so right. The car in the picture looks like a
steelframed car but i dont know if it´s any big difference. It is a
very nice engine with a lot of torque and bhp. With a little higher
comp. and different camshaft you will have really nice, revving,
engine. Your Marcos was converted to have a wankel before? It would
be fun to se some pictures of your car and your work when you start.
