What is happening to this group

2014-03-13 by Steinpom

Hello everybody/somebody.

This group seems to have gotten incredibly quiet for the last 2 months.
Where has everyone and their projects gone? Has this group died all of a
sudden?

Hope not,

Danny

Obomacare sucking up everyones spending cash?

I've been gathering parts for mine as I can but there is not much cash to spare with the price of everything going up so badly.

1600 GT wood chassis.
Major restoration project.
Was intent on putting an Alfa engine in it, now sort of looking for a Kent 1600 to build.

Marcos recommends not exceeding 125 H.P. for the wood chassis cars.
So the Alfa may be a bit much.
Torque should be a bigger issue than H.P.

One thing that cannot hurt are the new alloy cylinder heads, a little expensive at around $900.00
SCAT now makes new cranks too.
If cost is no object new upgraded 711M blocks are available from Ford Motorsport distributors.

What I find a bit perplexing is that prices seem to be the same in $ and £ depending on which side of the pond you are.
Since the exchange rate is around 1.7-1 it would seem there should more discrepancy.
Of course the best selection of parts are in the U.K.
I'm already wincing at the anticipated cost of a new windscreen and shipping.

Some of us are lucky enough that we dont' need to do anything but keep up with those that do....since I have a 3.5 EFI Flapper that runs perfect (fingers crossed) all I can think of is a rising rate fuel pressure regulator at a cost of about $130 with gage. Does anyone know whether or not this is worth the money?

Here's a Marcos Update

2014-03-13 by Chuck WATSON

Thanks for the note about Facebook Mike as I wasn't aware of it. Here's an update on me. I purchased Mike Rogers' 1969 1600GT out of New Mexico a couple of months ago. Nice original car with typical wear but no rot found so far. An unexpected surprise was the fact that the PO's had kept meticulous notes (back to the 70's), stacks of Marcos club magazines (with cross references of tech articles!) and organized bins of spare parts. My time with the car has been limited due to other projects and the fact that the car is not currently running due to long term storage. My intention is to bring this car up to vintage racing standards while retaining the stock elements as much as possible. I've had some great advice from Mike Denman about this.

Anyone out there looking to unload some original Marcos design alloy wheels. Not sure if they fit the 1600 but love the look.

If anyone on this list is in the southeast US it would be great to see another car out there.

Thanks,
Chuck Watson

Larry, here,
I an in the pre assembly stage of Chris's 1970 Marcos number 3v5640. I have removed the automatic gear box and replaced it with a M 410 Volvo box with Over drive. I removed the rusted lower frame rails and welded in new one. The body and paint work has been done by a local shop in Sarasota. It has a beautiful finish. I will let Chris tell you about the color when the car is finished. It has been a fairly easy restoration. Some minor upholstery work, new wool carpet and a new sunroof.

Regards,
Larry

Bob,
I was in Danville last wednesday to pick up 2 early plywood gulwings for John Sutton in England. I arrived in beautiful weather, but left as it turned to s---. Wish I had more time there. Would liked to have stopped by your place.
If you get by Danville, sometime, stop by TIVVY AUTOCRAFT and have a look at some of his projects.

Well it seems I'm now looking for a Cortina 1600 711M engine to build.
Of course all the good parts seem to be in the U.K. at double the price.

Got a T9 box to use but that also has an issue as the shifter is too far back.
Chances of finding a good "E" box with overdrive here are slim to impossible.

I did find a set of period correct Shelby "Cobra" 13" mag wheels which are similar to Libra wheels.

Need a list of the correct woods and their locations to repair my chassis.
Will need pics and locations of proper engine mounts too.

Who, if anyone, is importing Marcos parts now without excessive markup?

Richard,

I am putting together a list of parts required to rebuild my 1962 Luton Gullwings. If you need any parts shipped to the USA I may be able to help. However I am not coming over for 12 months.

Bob,
I was in Danville last wednesday to pick up 2 early plywood gulwings for John Sutton in England. I arrived in beautiful weather, but left as it turned to s---. Wish I had more time there. Would liked to have stopped by your place.
If you get by Danville, sometime, stop by TIVVY AUTOCRAFT and have a look at some of his projects.

Larry

I have had my 1600 down for a clutch master cylinder since the Fall of last year. The weather also has nor been very conducive her in S/W Virginia.

Looking forward to Spring, which seems late this year.

good to see there's at least one other warm body out there. Which car do you have?

Mine is still in the same condition as it was when I bought it 10 years ago
- waiting for me to repair the footwell boxes where the plywood's
delaminating. You'd think I'd have gotten to it by now, but after opening a
restoration business, I seem to be working on everyone else's projects but
mine.and the cobbler's kids have no shoes.

But, I'm still lurking and saving virtually every post so that I'll have a
wealth of information to comb through when I do get at it. Any stories
about successfully rebuilding the footwell boxes may serve as additional
motivation to set paying client work aside and dig in.

Hello everybody/somebody.

This group seems to have gotten incredibly quiet for the last 2 months.
Where has everyone and their projects gone? Has this group died all of a
sudden?

Hope not,

Danny
