My solution to that is to apply a photoshop curve with a straight line 
from 0 to 254 - that way the maximum value is 254 and you won't have the 
problem with qtr 255 value = 0 ink.

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
