Headaches on Mac

2013-08-01 by davidkachel

I can't seem to find anything the last few days.
One set of instructions says to use the curve creator. If there is one in the Mac installation, I can't find it.
Instructions also say I can convert qidf to quad. Can't find where or how, except the advice to use the curve creator that, near as I can tell, doesn't exist.
Can't just throw a qidf file into the printer installation folder. The installer doesn't like it. Tried duplicating a file that was already in the installation folder and substituting content. Installer didn't like that either.

Any help would be appreciated. If there is a definitive Mac doc on QTR somewhere, I'd really love to know about it.

Below, I've pasted some QTR forum comments on point.

But first, the Windows Gui for the Curve Creator is so good, I have to
wonder if there isn't a practical way to have a Windows partition and clone
or emulator that allows you to take advantage of the Win GUI's. Roy is a
Mac (actually Linux background) programmer. He doesn't do Win GUI's. The
Mac side, however, in my view is something only a programmer can
appreciate. I like my graphical user interfaces. (Ironic that the Win
side ended up with the GUI here and not the Mac side)

At any rate, it also sounds like you can use the *.quad files that are
generated, but since my crash, most of what I have are the *.qidf files.

Got to go. Here are the QTR comments.

If you're talking about a GUI tool, no, it's only on Windows.

In your QuadtoneRIP applications folder, you should have a folder called "CurveDesign". Inside that is an application called "Drop-Quad-Profile". If you drag a qidf file onto that file (that's the only way to do it; you can't use File > Open), it should do the right thing.

In that same "CurveDesign" folder, there should be a document called "GettingStarted.rtf". While I wouldn't call it "definitive," it might be helpful for what you're trying to do. There is also "Tutorial.pdf" in the main QTR folder.

I'm pretty sure all those documents came with the standard QTR install. But if they didn't, and I picked them up elsewhere, let me know and I can send them to you.

My first response got eaten. No pasted comments found.

I feel your pain. Like you Iʻve just started making profiles on my Mac. After days of effort I did manage to work through the process and got a few to come out with nice, linear tone gradations on the test printouts. There is nothing out there from what I can find that eliminates all ambiguity for rank beginners, but the article that helped the most was this one:

BUILDING QuadToneRip (QTR) PROFILES WITH MAC'S
For novices by a novice
Michael Mathers

Since Iʻm not Michael Mathers I donʻt feel I have the right to post the pdf to this groupʻs files section, but if you email me, Iʻll pass it along.

Also, there are one or two excellent articles by Keith Carter. Hereʻs one: http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/article_pages/bw_printing/bw_print_colormunki.html

Using the tutorial that comes with QTR, the Mathers article and the article by Carter, (and a ColorMunki Photo) I was able to emerge with working profiles. Now it only takes two hours instead of two days.

I tried to make a simplified tutorial starting at page 11 of
http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/Eboni-4-Plus.pdf. But, I'm PC. So, this
does not deal with the Mac issues.

Is there no app that would allow Mac users to run the QTR Windows GUI on
Macs? For building profiles, it seems like that might be one route to
explore.

Thanks for the link, Paul. I've got a Windows 7 disk on my Mac accessible through Bootcamp. Based on some of your comments here, it sounds promising to explore curve creation on that platform — as long as I can port the curve over to the Mac side for final image edits and printing. As it is now, nobody could describe the Mac workflow for curve creation as intuitive.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
