Starting with a new iMac

Starting with a new iMac

2013-08-01 by Tim

I have a brand new iMac running OSX10.8.4, the processor is 3.4Ghz Intel Core i7. My printer is a new Epson 3880 and I have it hooked up via Ethernet, so it has a network address.
Any time I try to print, the print dialogue provides both the option to use the EpsonStylusPro3880-849299 (IP), and the Quad3880. I thought I followed the instructions correctly for setting up the QTR printer, which includes putting in the IP address for a network printer. Yet, every time I try to use the Quad3880, the printer app., the one that shows the cue and active print jobs, shows the progress bar that appears as if the print job is being processed, and yet, nothing happens. If I print with the normal network printer, it works fine, but of course that won't work for QTR files.
My second problem is that I am trying to print the Inkseparation file in calibration mode, so that I can get started printing but there appears to be no way to turn off colour management. It is either "Printer manages colour" or "Photoshop manages colour".
When I did the workshop with Ron Reeder, QTR seemed so simple. I can't get anything to work so far. The QTR version I installed is the latest, 2.7.2.

QTR will only work via USB, not ethernet.

Hi

Installed QTR and QTR Print Tool on my 1430 via Ethernet (wireless) and everything is going nicely.

I'm on a Mac with 10.8.4 and I must say that working with QTR Print Tool is much easier since I can bypass the "colour management" problem in Photoshop 4 and later.

Good luck

Yes, QTR can work just fine -- ethernet or wireless.
The issue though is to use Bonjour method rather than IP numbers.
Look at Tutorial.pdf at the end. Set it up by select your 1430 as a
bonjour printer,
name it Quad1400 and Using QTR 1400 2.7 driver.
Then you can use the Install1400 script to add curves.

The other hassle is color management. OSX and Adobe has made it so there
are several issues
and problems -- you can't control it.
Print-Tool solves these issues -- has No CM as well as App CM that works
for grayscale.
Take a trial run to see it.

David , hopefully not a dumb question..I assume Qtr is designed to only look at the USB port for a printer.. If that is the case might not apples 29.00 USB / Ethernet adapter work? Lion has a driver built in for it.. Their are also 3rd party converters but then you'd have to install their driver.

You can setup a printer using Bonjour ( on the Mac at least). The process is quite well described in the QTR user manual. Look for Bonjour in the user manual, i5 is quite at the end iirc.

For this, the network printer either has to speak bonjour (also called zeroconf) natively (most do), or you would have to hook up the printer to some device that can, e.g., an Apple Airport wifi router.

Problem Solved.
Thank you Roy. Indeed, using the QTR print tool solves the problems of Colour management. And I am using the Ethernet connection.

Thanks

After several attempts, I have finally gotten this far. I am using an Epson 1430 and a MacPro with 0S X 10.7.5 (Lion) and have installed a Bonjour QUAD1400 printer on my local network.

> Then you can use the Install1400 script to add curves.

My problem now is that I can only install two curves: the two that are included in the QTR Profiles folder under 1400-CL. I can print using either of these two. When I try to install profiles from other sources ( e.g.Paul Roark's Claria curves ), I get a message( in part) like this for each of the "other source" curves:

    "Creating curve Claria-UPGPP-BO-5Lm025"
  "Couldn't open /Library/Printers/QTR/quadtone/Quad1400/Claria-UPGPP-BO-5Lm025.
       quad for writing: Permission denied"

This suggests a writing permissions problem, but I have checked this and all the relevant files in the Library have Read&Write access.

I think I have followed the instructions in the Mac Tutorial correctly on page 5 under the Heading "Installing Custom QTR Profiles from another sources". I should note that I placed the Roark curves in the same profile folder 1400-CL with your two and tried several install script names: Install1400, Install1400-CL. I also created a new personal profile folder named 1400-lmf and named the install script accordingly. All with no success.

I'm stuck. Hope someone can show me the way.

I addressed this just a few days ago, though it may have been on the
printing list.
Uninstall everything QTR. Printers, folders, the works.
Restart your Mac with the Shift key held down so no extensions or startups
load.
Reinstall everything QTR and your new curves.
I haven't tracked down the problem. I thought it was TypeIt4Me, but unless
it is intermittent, that was not the problem.

Installing with extensions off is a nuisance, but not a big one.

David,

Thanks for the response. I had seen your earlier post and tried it but not in the way you just described--I did not uninstall everything first. Since the printer was successfully (I thought) installed, I just did a restart from there. That did not work--I will give it another try as you suggest.

I didn't uninstall everything either, the first time. The first time the
problem was installing printers. The second time the problem was installing
curves. That's when, at the suggestion of someone else, I uninstalled
everything first. A PITA, but at least it's a solution.

Tell me what software, especially login items, you had running at the time
and I'll compare it to what I usually have going. Maybe we can find the
culprit.

Do you use TypeIt4Me?

I'm not at all sure, but typically I have Safari (v6.0.5) and Mail (v5.3) running and possibly 1Password (v3.8.21) as well. I don't use TypeIt4Me.

I haven't tried a reinstall yet because I think this will be the 3rd or 4th time and it is, as you say, a PITA. Next day or so.......

I am having a continuing problem with installing and using QTR on my Mac.

I tried David Kachel's suggestion of uninstalling everything QTR and restarting my computer with the shift key held down and then reinstalling the QTR software. This appeared to work fine since I could actually print with two of the curves in the 1400-CL folder. But I have been this far before.

The problem comes when I try to install custom profiles, and the install command script still does not work. The relevant message I got in part from the script install attempt is:

"Cannot find an Epson USB printer with the name 1400".
(The printer was turned on and connected to the computer- wireless).

I used Roy's method shown above for setting up the Quad1400 printer. Since I had installed my Epson 1430 as a Bonjour printer (wireless), it isn't surprising to me that the Quad1400 printer is wireless also and not a USB printer. So why is the script even looking for an Epson 1400 USB printer? I suppose I could reinstall the 1430 as a USB printer and then create an Epson 1400 USB printer but I really prefer to use the wireless mode. Also doing this is not consistent with Roy's instructions above.

For the record, the curves I was attempting to install were some of Paul Roark's Claria BO profiles. I changed his files from .qidf to .txt extension and placed them in the 1400-CL profiles folder and used Install1400-Cl.command as the install script.

I don't know what I am doing wrong or how to go from here. I feel frustrated but really want to get this solved and be able to use QTR. Thanks for any advice.
