loss of tones

loss of tones

2014-03-11 by Joel Conison

I am having a weird & baffling problem. I'm running mac 10.8.5, K7 inks, 7800 printer . I just had my printer serviced by Epson. All is well with the printer as we ran 2 nozzle checks. One was the standard test with the lines that shows any breaks in the lines & the other one that shows the tones in solid blocks of tone between white spaces (the one that comes out after a power clean, much larger than the small jagged lined nozzle test). All heads are clear as shown in both tests. But, my prints lack a deep solid black, a lack of sharpness, and overall lack of contrast.

I printed 2 files that have been printed many times. I thought maybe the files are corrupted (never heard of that, although I have had a corrupted color profile), so I went to my backup dvd & chose the same file to print. The exact same result. Also let me mention the edges around the print are not sharp edges, it looks like a little bleed outside of where the edge should be, very uneven bleeding .In order to they to isolate the problem I opened the raw file & worked the same process I always do, which is make a selection of the bird & move it to a separate file so I can add a background. Below are captures of set up.

The print looks fine, solid black, good contrast, good sharpness, but still has a little bleed on some parts of edges, not all. I'm totally baffled. I'm 5 weeks behind in delivering some prints, so if anyone has suggestion, I would appreciate it.
Thank you
Joel

Yes, the Epson tech did an alignment with his software & I also did an auto align. According to his judgement everything was aligned.

Is anyone out there printing direct to plate using QTR? If so, would you mind sharing your DPI and dither settings?

Thanks

Alan

Yep. 2880 dpi (file 360/300 dpi) unidirectional, matte black, ordered.

What kind of plate are you guys talking about? Photopolymer? Offset? Something else?

Is anyone out there printing direct to plate using QTR? If so, would you
mind sharing your DPI and dither settings?

Just to remind everyone. There is a forum for photogravure now. DTP is part
of the discussion..

Stig,

Is that what Messec in New Mexico is using? Have you taken his workshop?
If o, I'd like to know what your take on it was.

Hi David.

You will have to ask mr. Messec on that one – my guess is he´s working with
something like ImageOn – but I’m not sure. I’m printing directly on Toyobo
KM73 – but you’ll have to drop by Copenhagen for a workshopJ

Stig,

I too am printing directly onto KM73, but have been printing after exposing the plate to an aquatint screen. I've been extremely pleased with my results but would like to eliminate the screen. Any particular reason you are using matte black. The plates don't really require that kind of blocking power.

Alan,

If you are printing direct to the plate, then the dither patter will act as
an aquatint screen. You should get no open bite.

David,

That does raise a question in my mind though. Why do I need to use a screen if I use a digital positive? Shouldn't the same dither pattern be there?

Hi David,

I teach twice a year at Don Messec's workshops. He's using ConeColor PRO Matte Black for the direct plate gravure. He has access to all the Piezography ink sets - including our fully opaque shade 1 and even the Piezography Digital Negative ink sets.

But, he finds that the ConeColor PRO MK works best for his direct plate process including over the Epson MK.

He is very accessible and you can contact him at Making Art Safely, Santa FE, NM

Jon Cone

Thanks. That's good to know. Someone else told me the other day that he was
using Epson's MK. So, this helps clarify.

Is there any notable advantage of the Cone ink over the OEM, different
scale, etc.?

I would imagine the Epson dither pattern will work just as well that way.

Questions for those printing DTP on KM73 - what printer(s) are you using, and have you had any issues with roller marks?

Thanks,
