The R3000 has a manual front feed for DVDs, CDs and papers varying in thickness from 0.7 to 1.3 mm. Keep in mind that this printer has the ink cartridges separated from the print head, unlike, say, the R2400. The carts are connected to the print head via tubing, similar to the R38xx. Should you wish to change inks from OEM to, say, grayscale MIS or Cone inks, you’ll have to flush the lines completely and all together; ink channels cannot be flushed individually like on the R38xx. And the flushing process cannot be done easily on a Mac because the (third party) software to do this runs only on Windows. In my case this meant purchasing Parallels and Windows 7. If you are on a Mac, contact me for more info. Harry Lockwood hflockwood@verizon.net

I don’t see that QTR has anything to do with how front loading works with the R3000, but since I haven’t tried front loading before, I’ll run a print for you to see what happens. Harry Lockwood hflockwood@...

I would really like to know the answer to this. We are on Macs and have not been able to use the front feeder on the R3000. Pizza wheel marks are a real problem on digital negatives that require a lot of ink (i.e, for salted paper). Printing using the front feeder solves this problem. Works fine on the 3800's.

Well, I¹ll be damned! I tried straight-through front loading using the poster setting, but the printer sensed that I didn¹t have the paper that I claimed to be using and refused to print. Then I went to the Fine Art setting, opening the rear top draw (not the regular top sheet feeder), and again, the printer informed me that I wasn¹t using the (Epson) paper I claimed to be using. Very smart printer. Somehow, to make this work, one needs to fool the printer into believing the inserted paper is one of the approved Epson papers. It doesn¹t even work with Epson EM in 13x19 size (not a fine art paper nor the right thickness I imagine.) So, contrary to my statement below, using QTR is indeed relevant, which seems to suggest that one has to use one of the approved Epson papers and have a profile for that paper. Sorry I was unable to help. (And another reason I should have opted for an R3880 instead of the R3000.) Harry P.S. I¹d like to slip in an OT question here. I'm not sure where you guys are looking. QTR has 4 entries forPaper Feed -- Sheet, Roll, Manual Rear and Manual Front.
Get the most recent version on the download page.PC is 2.7.2 but the QTRgui does show 2.7.0 -- its OK.Mac is 2.7.4

OK, another attempt - it will depend on which 3000 printer the QTR driver is expecting - the color 3000 didn't have a front feed option. The R3000 (much more recent) does. The Quad3000 printing model appears to be for the old Color 3000 and has only roll and standard sheet feed available in QTRgui (matching the Color 3000 physical hardware capabilities).

O.K. Roy, I was careless in my wording. Poster loading refers to front, straight thru loading; Fine Art refers to front loading but not straight thru. These are Epson designations which we can instead call FL1 and FL2, respectively. They are mechanical options for front loading paper. So change the sentence, "I did use the front loading selections in QTR, both the Poster and the Fine Art selections, without any luck.” to “I did use both of the R3000’s front loading options while in QTR, which, for convenience, I’ll call FL1 and FL2, without any luck.”Furthermore, with all due respect, your statement "Like I said before -- QTR for R3000 has 4 entries for Paper Feed -- Sheet, Roll, Manual Rear and Manual Front. If you are not seeing these you are in the wrong place.” is not relevant because I was in QTR, and I did see those options, and I did choose Manual Front which did not work with either of the printer’s mechanical options for manual front loading, FL1 or FL2.But before sending the above reply, I went back to the printer for one last try - and had some success! It appears that the straight thru option (FL1) requires thick (0.7 to 1.3mm) paper, and the size must be 13x19. But more importantly, once the quadR3000-k7 printer is chosen from the drop-down menu , the printer goes no further, it refuses to print. However, if one chooses instead the Epson Stylus Color R3000, printing proceeds as planned – by Epson. So, QTR printing via FL1 seems unlikely. What about FL2, front loading but not straight thru? Before choosing driver or printer (QTR or Epson) I inserted a thick sheet of 13x19 paper with the rear support open and the front loading platform extended. The printer screen instructs me to load fine art paper (heading toward FL2!), and press OK to start. I’m informed that the paper is loaded, and I proceed to print, via QTR, successfully. So it appears that the order of the steps is important.I then tried to print in the same manner but with thick 8.5x11 paper. Again, starting with the rear support open I chose FL2 (Fine Art) from the printer screen and proceeded to print successfully, via QTR.The success in FL2 mode did not extend to printing with standard thickness, e.g., EEM, paper. When I tried to print 13x19 I was informed that the setting didn’t match the paper. When I switched to letter size, I never got that far; the printer responded with a message that the paper was skewed, a problem I couldn’t solve. If there is a permutation that I haven’t tried and should, I’m open to suggestion.Harry

QTR has the Paper Feed selections on the QTR print dialog page.Selecting papers sizes for the Epson driver does not do it for QTR.Like I said before -- QTR for R3000 has 4 entries for Paper Feed -- Sheet, Roll, Manual Rear and Manual Front. If you are not seeing these you are in the wrong place.Roy--

Roy,Your note is somewhat unclear. With the rear support open, I was able print, via QTR, on both Letter and 13x19 thick paper but not on thin, e.g., EEM, paper. With the rear support closed, I was unable to print on thick 13x19 paper, via QTR, after choosing the quad-K7 printer. Instead, if I chose the printer as Epson Stylus R3000, I was able to print because the printer assumed Epson K3 or equivalent inks were in use.You said, "Actually I think I need the back support open for it to work.” Yes, that is the mode that I was able to get working. The question is, were you able to print, via QTR, with the rear support closed? That’s the mode I couldn’t get to work. If your answer is “yes” please supply the step by step procedure. Or not.HarryDate: Monday, April 14, 2014 at 6:59 PM

Subject: Re: [QuadtoneRIP] Re: R3000 Manual Front FeedHi Harry,I must confess I never use the manual loading in any printer -- hasn't seemednecessary. So I had to look in the R3000 manual.Using page 14 "Loading Thick Media" -- this all seemed to work as itssupposed to. Only 13x19 paper works (funny I can push a large sheet intoprinter but an 8.5x11 sheet won't go in -- paper may be a little thinner).Anyway printed fine using QTR -- Manual Front. Looks to me that's what you reported in your email. I don't see any significant difference in the page 8 Fine Artloading. Actually I think I need the back support open for it to work.So I really don't get what you think works and doesn't work -- or how itmight be different. The Epson driver paper selections are really complicated so I really don't know if I've covered the bases.Sorry,RoyOn Mon, Apr 14, 2014 at 1:42 PM, Harry Lockwood <hflockwood@...> wrote:
If there is a permutation that I haven’t tried and should, I’m open to suggestion.HarryDate: Monday, April 14, 2014 at 1:19 PM
