Can't do anything with QTR 2.7.2

Can't do anything with QTR 2.7.2

2014-04-16 by <david@...>

Roy,
I sent you an email the other day. I may have sent it to the wrong address. Didn't get any response.
I'm bordering on desperation here because I can't get any printing done.
After attempting the manual install of 2.7.4 that you sent, I have been unable to do much of anything. Today I removed all traces of QTR and reinstalled 2.7.2. Tried to install curves for my 3800 and for my 3880. In both cases, I get this:

Last login: Wed Apr 16 18:05:05 on ttys000

You need to use 2.7.4 -- get the download on the website.
Just install it. And then use the install3800 that comes with 2.7.4

It wouldn't install, remember? You sent me pieces of 2.7.4 to install
manually because the installer wouldn't work.

I'm trying to go back to 2.7.2 so I'll be able to use my printers.

Oh, yeah. Did you/we try 2.7.3?
What is the exact things you are doing to make 2.7.2 work --
i.e. I want to see what steps you are using.

No. I must have skipped over 2.7.3. I don't have the installer.
When you first released 2.7.4 I tried the installer and the installer
failed. Tried with extensions turned off, etc., the usual things.
Then I reinstalled 2.7.2 and you sent me parts of 2.7.4. After putting those
in, I started getting errors.

Yesterday I fired up my 3800, which I hadn't used for a while and wanted to
install a new curve to run some tests. I am concerned that "Couldn't open
/etc/cups/ppd/Quad3800.ppd for reading: No such file or directory" might
mean some serious low-level problems since apparently QTR is looking for a
file it needs and can't find it, even after having just installed it.

Couldn't open /etc/cups/ppd/Quad3800.ppd for reading: No such file or directory.

Are you certain that the /private/etc/cups/ppd subdirectory privileges look correct? When I look at the info for that subdirectory (Cmd-i), System is given Read&Write privilege, and “_lp” and “everyone” are given Read privilege.

I’m using OS X 10.9.2, and /library/printers/QTR/bin/quadinstall is dated 2014-01-14. It installed a 3880 without complaint.

I had repaired everything before the last try.

Okay, but when you actually look at the directory, did the “repair” produce the expected result?

The only other thing I can think of is to try running Install3880 command as a “SuperUser” (sudo -s in the Terminal). I’m really klutzy at that level, but it should be possible, and it would guarantee the ability to write the printer file in the proper place.

Well, since I don\u2019t know what the "expected results" might be, I just have to trust the Mac OS that when it says permissions were repaired, they were.
Besides, the same failure occurs with two different printers, so I think that is unlikely.

Re: [QuadtoneRIP] Can't do anything with QTR 2.7.2

David,

By “expected results” I meant something like what I related in my earlier email for my own computer. The installation program seems to work for me, so that outcome seems to be good enough. (“System” having both Read and Write permission for /private/etc/cups/ppd seems most relevant.)

Whatever printer you try to install, it will access the same installation program: /Library/Printers/QTR/bin/quadinstall $0

The $0 picks up the appropriate printer name from the context (the directory name, I think, or perhaps the Installxxx.command name), so no matter what specific printer you install, you’re using “quadinstall” plus the correct printer name.

If the “quadinstll” binary cannot write to the location where the printer file is supposed to go, you would get the error messages you in fact keep getting. Can you write a file to the ppd directory? Try changing the permissions for that directory to allow “everyone” Read & Write permission. (I don’t know how comfortable you are with the Mac operating system. . . and I don’t want to sound like a know-it-all talking down to you, so I'll leave it at that.)

Re: [QuadtoneRIP] Can't do anything with QTR 2.7.2

2014-04-18 by <clay@...>

I think I posted this here a few months back when I was having similar problems with my Epson R3000 installation on Mavericks. Substitute your 3880 printer names where appropriate:

First problem is a permissions problem. Open Terminal window and navigate to /Applications/QuadToneRIP/Profiles/EpsonXXX directory

Then type sudo InstallRXXXX.command

It will either install or you will get an error like this:
Installing QuadToneRIP Curves Printer QuadR3000
Couldn't open /etc/cups/ppd/QuadR3000.ppd for reading: No such file or directory

This means that for whatever reason, the silly .ppd file is gone. You need to put it there.

Open a Finder window using Go->Go to Folder... and tell it to go to /etc/cups/ppd

in the terminal window type ls -al

You should not see the QuadR3000.ppd file in here. Leave this terminal window open on your desktop.

There is something hosed up with the Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks permissions that will not allow the ppd files to expand properly. You will have to outsmart Apple and all its nanny-state rules.

So now open up a separate Finder window and type in Go->Go to Folder.. and then type in /Library/Printers/QTR

Open up the ppd folder and double click on the appropriate .ppd.gz file. In my case QuadR3000.ppd.gz and it will probably decompress into your Downloads folder.

Now navigate to your Downloads folder and drag the decompressed QuadR3000.ppd folder to the /etc/cups/ppd folder. The system will ask you for your password.

_Now_ you can install the printer properly. Go back to where you began, and open up a terminal window and navigate to your install script, e.g. cd /Applications/QuadToneRIP/Profiles/EpsonXXX

Thanks. By the time I got your post, I had already decided a total clean install of system and all software was required.
I'll leave out the details, but, four days later...!
I STILL had permissions problems with an all new, clean system. However, your advice helped me get going again right away.

Thanks

Are you doing anything out of the ordinary when you build your clean system? For example, are you creating an additional user without administrative privileges, and then trying to install QTR as that user?

No, nothing of the sort. I think the primary problem was just that my
system was long in the tooth and created some odd permissions problems.
Other things were happening too, so a fresh start was indicated.
