Baffled over inability to print using QTR with new computer

Baffled over inability to print using QTR with new computer

2014-05-01 by <docsock41@...>

I had a cooperative and happy history with my old Windows XP computer, printing on an Epson 2880 with QTR. Because of Microsoft's decision to longer support XP, the computer was replaced with a Lenovo M93p (with intel quad-core i7-4770). I downloaded the latest version of QTR (version 2.7.2), and installed it. While it looks beautiful with a new skin, after either selecting a file or dragging a file into the print box and pressing the "print" tab, the latter becomes a "cancel" tab for about a minute, after which the image of the file disappears and the "print" tab returns. No printing is done (and nothing shows in the print queue).

I'm baffled. Anybody have similar experience or any ideas on how to get around this?

Thanks,

Alan Sockloff

You replaced it just because of that? I have several XP machines I will use until they die. Microsoft really never offered any good support anyway.

I recently looked up implications of Microsoft no longer upgrading WIN XP.

Figures indicate around 30% of PC computers around the world are still using XP.

Microsoft wants to “encourage” these users to pay them to upgrade.

Because of shared code between XP, Vista and Win 7 bugs found will be corrected in the later systems, but not XP. People will exploit these knowing XP is not revised, and there are many XP computers around.

Best advice was, if connected to the internet get a good anti-virus program. If not it does not matter.

I had been hoping for slightly more constructive responses to my problem in using the new computer. The issue was not really about replacing the old computer, and whether or not it was justified, but, rather, about how to get the Lenovo M93p computer using QTR to print on the Epson 2880.

Incidentally, the old XP computer was 9 years old, typically froze one or more times during each computer session, fairly consistently lost contact with my LAN after sleep plus had difficulties reconnecting with the LAN (other computers on the network did not have any of these problems), and inserted strange marks and symbols in various documents. Besides, it needed more memory and speed in handling large photo scans (from 4x5 negs). Microsoft's non-support-of-XP-decision was, as they say, the straw the broke ...... (And, it had been well protected by an anti-virus program during all those years.)

I'm not sure what you are using your XP workstations for, but for a photographic editing workstation Win 7 64 with a lot of memory, a uber fast processor, modern display adapters and so forth can't be compared to XP.

I still have XP boxes doing duty as backup servers and other tasks like supporting CS4 for printing only, but for my money get a Win 7 system built while you can since MS has stopped selling it and is now only selling Win 8.

Problem solved. The computer had created a virtual printer, to whose input queue it was sending all of my QTR print jobs. While the Epson 2880 print queue was empty, the virtual printer's queue was loaded with my print jobs. Finally, the printer destination on QTR was changed to the Epson. Works like a charm now.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
