Experimenting with a P7000

Experimenting with a P7000

2016-02-27 by yg_1@...

I've got an SC-P7000 (LLK version) here for a while from Epson UK for a review and since I've not had a big Epson here for quite a while, thought I'd have a look at QTR printing (I've long used it to generate correction profiles for B&W print modes)

I noticed it mentioned here that you could alter the name of the installer, and it seems to have installed (OS X 10.10) and sees the printer on the network

Since it's over 10 years since I tried making any curves, I had to go back to the basics ;-)

Just printing the ink separation test page and I notice that there are now several versions, including one with 10 colours.

I'm printing from PS CS6. Printer manages colour, QTR Calibration Mode (ink limit 100), custom 610x330mm page size (fits my standard 3k patch A3+ icc profiling targets) Roll feed (cut) 2880 bidirectional

However I'm not getting much further - I've a (24") roll of enhanced matte in the printer, and for the 10 colour file I get green and orange strips (with a thin grey strip above), whilst for other images I'm getting a three inch blank strip of paper cut off.

Given I've a 100 foot roll of the enhanced matte and a full set of spare ink carts, I'd rather check it out on this paper before using up better papers ;-)

Any suggestions welcome - it would be nice to include using QTR in the B&W print side of the review.

If you want to make curves, have exact control etc. PS CS6 will not be good enough. Lack of
NoCM (Printer manges color does not do what you probably expect) and grayscale ICC profiling
makes it very hard to do what you want.

Try out Print-Tool for all the old, tried and true CM capabilities.

BTW, the multiple ink separation files correspond to how many inks the printer supports.
Looks like you found out to rename script to InstallP7000=7900.command
This connects to P7000 printer with 7900 driver.

Since you're on OS X 10.10, you should be printing to QTR from Roy's Print Tool, rather than directly from PS. Since 10.6.8 there are colour management issues in printing direct from PS to QTR, and Print Tool was created as the solution. Those with more Mac experience can elaborate.

Probably not for this test - I've only got the printer here for a few weeks, so ABW and ICC profiling is as far as I'll likely look - although I'll probably include a bit about using profiles for linearising.

bye for now

I'd still be using Print Tool.

I'm loathe to use new (to me) third party software as part of a review of a different product.

If I've time, I'll see if I can include another review (I also have the latest version of ImageNest to test)

The point that Roy made in his post (#2) is that it ain't gonna work, printing direct from CS6 to QTR in recent versions of OS X. Well, it will print, but there's likely to be some Adobe & Apple inspired CM funny business happening in the background, which will affect your measurements and profiles. You want accurate results in your review or non? It will work in Print Tool, which is a fairly straightforward and uncomplicated layout and printing program. All it is really is a replacement for the PS print dialog, plus the odd bell and whistle.

Regarding ImageNest:

I have owned the program (17 inch version) for several years.

I went to www.BlueCubit.com to see if there was a new version - - - I have 3.7 (v1139M).

Using Safari on a MacBook Pro, I received a full-screen warning about the website. It says that some pages on the website install malware on visitors’ computers.

The warning *appears* to come from Google, and directs me to the following page for more information about BlueCubit’s website: https://www.google.com/transparencyreport/safebrowsing/diagnostic/index.html?hl=en-us#url=www.bluecubit.com

Does anyone have an email address for BlueCubit? I’d like to tell them about the problem, but to get their email I would have to use their website!

Myron

That's as maybe, but using QTR was just something I wanted to look at whilst I had a large Epson printer here for a week or so (with a hefty supply of ink and papers).

Since the P7000 is not officially listed and there are no curves for it, it was always going to be an experimental item, for another article and not part of the review. I may well get to experiment more - it was 2005 I last wrote about making ink curves for QTR. I've long appreciated Roy's work for people who want to experiment with aspects of B&W printing, even if I've never personally wanted to go for custom ink sets (much less easy to get in the UK than over the pond).

The P7000 does print perfectly well from Photoshop, both for colour and B&W - I've been making assorted profiles this afternoon for a range of papers. The print quality is excellent - for individual prints, I have no need of any other software, in the same way I print my work with our Canon iPF8300. Other have their own preferences...

BTW I noticed recently that the Mac ColorSync Utility now has a 'print as target' mode if you load target files - a bit less clunky to use than the ACPU
