Windows 10 and Curve Creation Users

2017-02-01 by Roy Harrington

Hi All

As you know there is an issue with using Curve Create on the new Windows 10.
I think I've found a fix by modifying one of my programs instead of QTRgui
which I cannot modify. I'm looking for a few regular users of windows 10 who
are willing to beta test this.

It's a simple replacement of the quadprofile.exe program in:
C:\Program Files (x86)\QuadToneRIP\bin\
(or wherever you've installed QTR driver)

Here's a link to the new executable:

You'll need admin access to do this. You may want to save the old one
by renaming to quadprofileOLD.exe for example.

Let me know if you try this and any comments.
The QTRgui Curve Create is still limited to 8-inks rather than 10-inks on
some new printers, but all other functions I believe will work.

Thanks,
Roy

Hello Roy,

Sorry to report it didn't work for me... I got a message back I don't understand. I tried posting a screen grab in our Photos section. Could be I'm doing something wrong, it's been a while since I've used Curve Creation.

Nevertheless, thanks for your good work.

Paul

Good news, Roy, I tried with two other qidf files and the Curve Creation Tool worked this time. Must have been some flaw in the first profile I tried. The two that worked ended up in the quad folder like it was supposed to, not in that Virtual Store folder.

Thank you! A very valuable tweak!

Regards

Paul

Roy,

Sorry it took me a while to test this out. I don't (currently) use Curve Create in QTRGui since I am using QTR mainly with the Piezography inks and curves. However I went ahead and did a test with the updated version just to see how it works. I get some strange errors when I run Curve Create on my Windows 10 64-bit system (Version 1607). Here's the sequence:

1. Launch QTRGui
2. Click on Tools --> Curve Creation
3. I get an error popup window (see file "curvecreate_1.png" in the files section of this group)
3. I click on "OK" in the popup window.
4. Again I click on Tools --> Curve Creation
5. I get the same error popup window with different address (see file "curvecreate_2.png)
6. I click on "OK" in the popup window
7. Now the Curve Create window launches successfully.

In TaskManager, I do not observe quadprofile.exe being launched at any time during the above steps, so it appears these memory addressing errors occur before quadprofile is executed.

I played around a bit with Curve Create and found other errors (e.g. I/O error 123, etc.) but I think those may be the result of permissions problems or user error on my part. To be honest, I'm not sure these errors are what you were attempting to fix with the updated quadprofile.exe but I wanted you to be aware of what I see on my system in any case.

I finally got around to trying it out in my W10 insiders build VM, and curve creation worked like a charm in 2.7.7. Perhaps try an uninstall and reinstall?

10-ink printer maybe?

Hi Roy.... just posted a question. Could this fix be what I'm looking for?
Please advise.

Re: Windows 10 and Curve Creation Users

@ Brian - I did a complete uninstall and then re-install; same errors with Curve Create.

@ Roy - Yes, my printer is a 7900 which is 10-color. I know that Curve Create only allows for 8 inks, however I guess I've assumed that it should at least launch without errors and would (should?) allow me to create a curve with 8 or less inks.

Are you saying that the memory addressing errors at launch of Curve Create is a result of using a 10-color printer?

Thanks, Dave

Re: Windows 10 and Curve Creation Users

2017-03-09 by dtrout@...

Just to complete this thread and answer my own question (previous post)....

Indeed, if on Windows 10 you try to launch the Curve Creation tool in QTRGui using a printer model for a 10 ink printer (e.g. Quad7900), you will get the memory addressing errors I outline above. But when I changed the printer model to Quad7890 (8-ink model), it works just fine with the 7900 (at least the tool launches cleanly with no errors).

So for anyone using Windows 10 and wanting to use Curve Creation in QTRQui on a x900 printer you can just select Quadx890 for the printer model and you should be able to proceed.. Of course you'll only be able to create a curve with up to 8 inks, but that is probably plenty sufficient for what most people want to do.

Maybe the above was obvious to everyone else. If so, sorry for wasting the bandwidth. In any case, it's one more reason we need a new QTR front-end app for Windows. Anyone up to speed on QT/C++, or maybe Java/JavaFX?
