Epson 1500W (1430 in the US) problem

Epson 1500W (1430 in the US) problem

2018-01-24 by Nigel Richards

Hi,

I use an Epson 1500W in the UK (1430 in the US) for both normal colour printing and monochrome using Quadtone Rip and the Claria profiles Paul Roark developed for printing glossy monochrome. It works well, recently I have noticed a degradation of the yellow when printing colour, this shows up in a nozzle check as well. It looks like a leak of black ink into the yellow , If you print a purge document a couple of times it comes clean but next day it is the same again . This probably has been going on for a while as I used to get faint lines in solid yellow areas for maybe 6 months. Last year it did lie unused for 3 months while I was in New Zealand and Australia.

Yellow and black are next to each other in the cartridge carrier, always thought that was a daft idea. No surplus ink under the cartridges, I have cleaned the capping station and the wiper blade.

The printer is 3 ½ years old and up to the last week only used with Epson ink. Only tried generic as I was trying to diagnose the problem and didn’t want to install a brand new set of Epson ink to flush it into the waste pads.

Just come off the phone to a Epson printer service engineer who says it is leakage within the head as the seals are breaking down and beyond economic repair and that he has seen it a number of times before with 1400, P50 and other Epson printers.

I wondered if I used the 1500W for just Quadtone Rip would a slight leak of grey into grey notice……………

So the question is has anybody else had this problem, is the diagnoses likely to be correct and might I get away with using the printer for QTR monochrome only or will it be all downhill from here.

Thanks

Nigel in the UK

This can happen with old cartridges too (not just an old head).

I suggest this set of carts if you want to try one last time (we re-engineered these cartridges to work with old printers): http://shop.inkjetmall.com/Inkjetmall-ReUsable-cartridge-Epson-1400-1430-T79-only-version-Set-6.html

Description of design changes: https://community.inkjetmall.com/t/new-small-format-cartridges-coming-soon/4202

Ink leakage will show up at micro-banding in QTR . .

Best,
Walker

RE: [QuadtoneRIP] Epson 1500W (1430 in the US) problem

2018-01-24 by Nigel Richards

Hi,

Thanks for the reply, it has recently had a new set of genuine Epson inks and also some generic inks in the last week to test the problem and avoid flushing expensive ink down to the waste pads. Still no improvement.

I used to overcome the 1500w QTR micro banding with strips of paper front and back held on with Low Tack Masking Tape and then a custom paper length, it works.

New Epson A3 printer announced in the UK Expression Photo HD XP-15000 it is on their web site – but a different Claria ink set.

 Cheers

Hi Nigel,

If yellow is being contaminated by black, use the Y channel for your next darkest ink and adjust your ink description file accordingly. I used this fix for quite a while infill the printhead finally gave up. Lots of head cleaning cycles may cause this known problem. Good luck, Jim

Hi,

Seems to be a moving target, last night I saw contamination in the magenta channel as well, looks like it is on its last legs. The cost of a new head just makes it uneconomic to repair, shame.

I was told yesterday that Epson UK announced to the trade that the 1500W model had ceased production, I guess the 1430 will be the same. The replacement uses a very different inkset.

Cheers

Hi,

About 6 months ago I mentioned to this group that I had internal leaks between channels in the head of my Epson 1500W A3 printer that I had used for QTR and normal printing. I had given up on it and consigned it to the loft. I spotted that on ebay “refurbished” heads were available from China. Not sure what can be refurbished on a second hand head I didn’t buy one (£60 to £80) but did take a note from the ebay listing of the other printers that the head fitted . At a local auction I spotted an Epson R265 A4 printer in near new condition which was on the list, my bid of £10 was accepted and after half a day taking the head out and installing it in my 1500w (using the service manuals as a guide). It is now performing as it was when new. Interestingly the “scan” lines at the start and end of the prints that I was plagued with for a year before the head died have also disappeared.

The only thing I can’t do is run the Epson Adjustment Program to input head ID shown on the label on the replacement head to set up correct voltages etc etc. I have been unable to find a copy that works and Epson won’t supply me with a copy. As the results are so good I am not sure I need to do it.

Just thought I would let the group know, it ended up being a very cheap repair.

Anybody know anything about the importance of the adjustment program or where a working copy can be obtained from?

 Cheers

When you say "Interestingly the 'scan' lines at the start and end of the prints that I was plagued with for a year before the head died have also disappeared", are you referring to the microbanding that unavoidably occurs in the first and last inch of the page when printing with QTR on a desktop printer? If the head swap somehow removed that phenomenon, that would be a remarkable discovery.

Not tried it with QTR yet it was happening on normal ink as well, after I replaced the head I thought it was a good idea to test it with some genuine Epson carts I had.

Yes I probably will join, not got the room for a wide printer, currently on my desk are the rebuilt 1500w and a 2880!

It is for wide format but you can still join, just might not be subjects you are interested in. But at least you can get some information for what you are looking for.
