I am a new member and I am sure I am about to ask a question that has been asked before.
I am using an Epson 1280 with UT2 inkset. I have just tried the QTR and there is some improvement but I think I have not used it correctly. The user guide seems straight forward until I get to "Creating and Editing Curves". I can't tell if that is something I am supposed to do even though I am using Epson Enhanced Matt and a curve for that paper exists in the program.
I don't seem to be getting the dynamic range I hoped for and the blacks are not that dense. I prefer neutral prints so I am using neurtral curves at 100%. The ink limit and gamma sliders don't seem to make much difference either.
Have I missed something along the way or is this normal?
Thanks
Richard

Hi Richard,
I am using the same setup as you. You do not have to use the curve
creator if you don't want to. They are for creating custom
profiles. You can use it to create curves for unsupported inks or
papers. You can also use it for tweaking the existing curves for
your printer. I have tried to improve on the supplied curves for my
printer and I have found I am not able to improve things much. The
existing profiles work very well with my printer. There is a great
deal of variation between individual printers, so YMMV. To use the
curve creator, you need a densitometer, spectrophotometer or scanner.
(A scanner did not work well for me)

Are you finding the black is much lighter then when you use the Roark
curves with UT7? I find I can't get the blacks quite as black as
with the curves, but the linearity makes QTR worth it to me. If the
black you are seeing is as black as with the curves, that may be the
limit for EEM with Eboni. There are some papers that will print
blacker, but that is also a limitation of matt paper.

Hope this helps.

Peter

Richard,

What profile is assigned to your file when you save to
print? Did you do a soft proof with the qrt-matte
profile? How did it look? Is your monitor profiled?

Thanks for the response. Actually, I am so new that I am not sure if I am
responding to Guy or the group by sending a reply. If I have done it wrong,
sorry.

The questions your raised points out that I know even less than I thought.
I am not sure what profile is assigned when I send to print. It is
grayscale and .tiff. I did so a soft proof using view>custom>Epson Enhanced
matt. The darks looks more dense and the whites a bit brighter. I am
pleased with the neurtrality of the print. No colors or tints seen. That
is the first time it has looked that way. I have not profiled the monitor
because I am getting a new one and it sounds like a big job if you don't
have the equipment or maybe I need to get the equipment.

Thanks again.

Richard

Re: [QuadtoneRIP] New member

Hi Richard,

QTR provides a color space (gray-lab.icc) and several
profiles (qtr-matte.icc and qtrphoto.icc) that can get
more predictable reliable results with QTR. Copy these
to c:\Program files\Common files\Adobe\Color\Profiles

Use the gray-lab as your working grayscale color
space. It is a modified LAB color space that just uses
L. Use convert to profile when bringing a file into
photoshop. Gray-lab provides a much more accurate way
of handling shadow values than other grayscale spaces.

Use the other two profiles when doing a soft proof
(pick under custom colors) or to convert to just
before saving a copy for printing. The qtr-matte is
for matte papers qtr-photo is for glossy papers. The
proofing is quite accurate except for the warm-cool
tone of the paper/ink curves.

A calibrated monitor will help you accurately match
your prints to the screen. This can be done with the
Adobe Gamma program or in a more automated fashion
with a profiling system with a puck and software.
There is a lot of opinion about which automated system
is best but for b&w the Pantone ColorVision Spyder2
kit for $149 does a good job and is a great value.

Hope this helps!
