Yahoo Groups wither

2018-07-06 by roscoetuff@...

FWIW, seems a lot of groups I've been involved with for years have moved to grouups.io from Yahoo. Some years back, yahoo stripped out the ability to search messages by content, converting search to message #. Maybe that can be done some other way here, but to my experience, it's ceased to function. Groups.io seems to have content search, and that's useful often. I'm told conversion isn't painless, but maybe it's useful. Yahoo reportedly is ceasing to support groups the same way they gutted Flickr earlier (now disposed of). Something to think about if it hasn't been already. Up to the moderators of course, but just putting my two cents in that if you did it, I'm on board.

I moderate a b/w and color print exchange group. We made the switch to groups.io. It was painless and we are glad that we did.

I strongly agree. If I'm not mistaken, other features in groups.io allow editing of one's post, notification that others have commented on the post, accepting images... these features are almost standard on other platforms. One thing to keep in mind is how to move the invaluable library of techniques, how-to's, etc. from the yahoo group over to the new format. I believe a large format yahoo group has made the move and managed to keep their library.

One thing that might be a side benefit would be to take this opportunity to combine the Digital B/W Print group and the QTR group. Maybe so? Maybe not such a good idea? What do y'all think?

I am co-moderator of the Epson Wide-Format Group and we moved everything with no issues. groups.io makes it easy.

Wow. Glad to hear I'm not the only one. I just discovered groups.io last night, and actually joined the Epson group coincidentally. Some groups moved their FILES and others seem to have dropped that functionality. I could see that for QuadRIP, it might serve a purpose Maybe there's a prospect? At least I didn't get my head bitten off (yet).

I highly recommend groups.io for a direct 1-1 transfer from Yahoo to something more future-proof. Mark handled the EWF group switch well and there wasn’t too much hassle in going to that.

If a transition is wanted and more functionality is required (forum threads + social login + traditional list-serve + attachments, IMs, etc) I also highly recommend this open-source forum software Discourse that I run over at the inkjetmall forums. It can take mailman and yahoo historic post data and users. https://www.discourse.org. It’s taken the internet by storm lately and can act just like a list-serve if need-be.

Best,
Walker
