I would always print at 2880 uni-directional when using QTR, even though I'd probably only print at 1440 on matte when using ABW (which I do only rarely). If you're still seeing banding on a P800 at 2880 then I'd print at 2880 super.
As I said to you on the DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint group, this setting was introduced by Roy specifically to deal with banding on the P800 - mostly on transparency for digital negative, but there are one or two people who claim to have seen it in prints on paper. You asked where to find this setting. This will depend on whether you're on Mac or Win, but it should be an option in the same place that you set 1440. In Win it's under Resolution. You'll need the latest version of QTR to see the 2880 Super setting, and it's only available for certain printers. It's not an option for the 3880 for example.
You may also want to look at your nozzle check under a magnifier such as a loupe. A nozzle check can appear good to the naked eye, but in fact have hard-to-see irregularities that indicate misfiring nozzles.

I recently bought an EPSON P800 printer. I
print black and white images using QTR on this. Yesterday I
noticed banding in the shadow areas on a print. Bands (showing variations in
tonality) were perpendicular to the direction of motion of
print heads.
My Settings:
I printed on Epson Archival Matte paper. I
used UCmk-EnhMatte-Neut as Curve 1 and rest of the curves as
blank. Resolution is 1440 dpi, Unidirectional Speed and
Matte Ink. Rest all defaults.
I did head alignment but to now avail. Nozzles
are very clean as shown by nozzle check. Any idea what might
be causing this? And how to resolve this?
BTW, I printed this image directly from
PhotoShop. That print did not have such banding.
Appreciate your help.
