Shift to Win XP Pro 64

2006-03-14 by Roger Sopher

Much as I like my old mac g4 dual processor it is becoming relatively
slow with pshop and qtr. I downloaded qtr for my xp 64 box and
installed it with without problem so far as I can see. Now in printing
to my 2200 with a firewire connection I get nothing but lines, no
image. I tried printing in the debug mode. Three screens came up but
they were blank. Have I missed something I need to install with qtr
when using xp 64? or ???

Roger,

Unfortunately with WinXP 64, you need 64-bit print drivers. That's
been one of my reservations about switching on dual-core Athlon. My
7000 with Cone inks would be inoperable, as you've seen. You need to
find WinXP 64 drivers from Epson for the 2200 and see if that works.

In case others haven't looked at the Epson site lately, Epson is releasing
64 bit drivers for their scanners and printers. I have seen listings on
their site for the 2200 and 2400. At the same time, I have no idea how well
they work ;)

I had a report from someone else that they were using QTR on a 64-bit
system. QTR does not need to be 64-bit but it does use the low edit of
the Epson print drivers for the spooling and hardware connection.
I'm not sure which printer they were using though. I doubt the 7000
will
be updated since it's so old. As an alternative idea maybe you can use
the old machine as a print server and the 64-bit machine for editing.

I have the XP 64 driver for the 2200 from the Epson site installed and it
functions without any perceived problems. 64 bit drivers are starting to
surface fairly regularly.

QTR on the other hand just produces dither, of the correct size but without
a semblance of an image. In debug mode the three appropriate windows open
but remain blank and show no activity during the printing process. I deleted
and reinstalled QTR and it made no difference -- still didn't work.

I guess my question is will/does QTR function under WINXP Pro 64?

Roger,

What do you mean by "produces dither"? Does it print something?
Do you end up with a .log file in the QuadToneRIP folder? If so, show
us
that maybe it'll have a clue.

The only XP64 info I know is that someone else asked me if it would
work.
So I had them try it and they reported that it was just fine.

 Hi Roy,

It prints a series of lines varing in width and gray tones down the page but
no image. The size on the page is correct. There is a log file which I'll
send to you if you will give me an address out of yahoo to send it to. The
problem might be that I produced the tiff files on a mac and then moved them
to the pc for printing. The mac prints them without problem but the pc seems
to gag for some reason. Could be the tiff compression from the mac isn't
readible on the pc. I have a copy of photoshop cs2 coming that I will put
up on the wn xp 64 box and process an image from scratch and see if the
problem still exists.

The 64 bit Epson driver doesn't seem to be a major factor since, if I
understand it correctly, QTR prints via gimp print.

The Win XP 64 box is quick as a cat and would be a nice platform but I am
not at all adverse to picking up a new Mac if there is a problem with the
Win XP 64 OS. I started out using an old mac as a print engine and loved OS
X and picked up a more capable box that could do it all but it is getting
pretty long in the tooth.

Roger

Roger, sorry to jump in here late but your exactly right about the
TIFF compression! Do one of two things to try this theory out.

1. Save the TIFF un-compressed.

2. In the Mac you can choose PC compression, try that one.

See if either print.

The Mac has always had an easier time reading PC files but not the
other way around!

Ok, I think I've got the issue.

The ZIP compression is not supported, but the LZW compression
is supported. There isn't a 64-bit issue with this.
It makes no difference whether you save on a Mac or PC
nor whether you select Mac or PC byte order. (BTW, new intel macs have PC order).
Also if it's an RGB file, Pixel Order should be "interleaved".

Question answered with more experimentation - QTR works just fine in Win
XP64. The problem I was having was in some tif files that were produced in a
mac. The pc version of qtr can't read mac tif files saved with zip
compression.

I really know nothing about XP 64 but perhaps there is a compatibility
mode for 32 bit apps.
