Help please - is Mac QTR different

Help please - is Mac QTR different

2006-12-14 by failedthespian

I have been happily producing B&W prints on my PC using QTR. The
controls seem straight forward and intuitive using the PC.

I have switched to Mac (totally new to this computer system and can't
understand why the familiar QTR interface isn't available.

I have tried installing the QTR a couple of times. I am either doing
something very wrong (most likely), or the QTR behaves very
differently on a Mac.

Can anyone please explain what is happening? I am based in the UK,
but will be happy to telephone who might be able to help me, as I am
getting nowhere fast with the Mac.

Many thanks.

Paul

It's in Photoshop? I was under the impression it was a stand alone application.

Thanks, Paul

There are 2 separate programs working together under Windows - QuadToneRip
and QTRGui, which gives you that GUI window. QTRGui is Windows-only, so
you're running QTR by itself without the GUI front end.

Dear All

I find this all very confusing. I assummed (incorrectly) that QTR would be the same in both Windows and Mac.

I have just managed to print the Tutorial. As I already have a license for QTR and paid my $50 fee some time ago, do I still require a passord to install it? When I install updates on Windows, I can't ever recall having to enter passwords as it states in the Mac Tutorial.

I was under the impression Macs are supposed to be easier than PC's!!

It is a standalone app under Windows - I assume it's the same on the Mac.
Cannot be accessed via PS in Windows.

I don't know as to the Mac - under Windows the 'trial' version is the full
and complete paid-for version - payment should be made if one uses it (I
paid) but no registration # or password appears to be required to use it.
According to the current License, "You are free to download and try the
product. It is a fully operational product, there are no disabled parts or
dongles. If it meets your needs and you want to use any pieces for your
regular workflow, please pay a shareware fee of fifty dollars $50. At the
present time there is no registration but this is subject to change."

I don't know what the situation is on the Mac - go ahead and install it and
see what happens. If you do need a password or code for the Mac and you've
lost or misplaced your password, or never received one, I'm sure Roy V.
Harrington can supply you with the old or a new one.

Chris Barrett kindly walked me through the mysteries of the Mac world and how the QTR differs from Mac to Windows. I have it sorted now - thank you.

On the Mac QTR is just another printer. In Photoshop select;

File>Page Setup...

or select:

File>Print with Preview and press the Page Setup... button;

then in the Page Setup dialog select your QTR printer in the middle
pull-down menu "Format for: " (where it defaults to "Any Printer").
Your printer will be named QUADxxxx.

Hope this helps,

Gilbert

There's enough documentation that suggests it works like a
printer driver on the Mac so should be available like that
through Photoshop. I'm on Windows and have no plans to migrate
but that's what I remember.

Paul,

The password needed is your admin password for installations. This is
a Mac OS X
thing not QTR. The Mac version is a bit different in that it's not a
separate program.
It's just part of the OS X print system. You'll need to run
Install-QTR-2.4.3.pkg and
then one of the install scripts for the printer/ink you are using.
For instance: Profiles/2100-2200-UC/Install2100
Once you do this there's a Quad2100 printer and you just print to it.
The familiar
options will be available in the QuadToneRIP print dialog page.

That exactly correct about QTR just being another printer, and all
Mac''s running any OS X operating system ALWAYS ask you for your
MASTER password anytime you install ANYTHING :) It will ask every
time you install or update any app so might as well get used to it.
If you've forgotten your MASTER password, you can boot from the
Startup CD/DVD and change it.

Good luck, and yes, the Mac is easier IMHO!

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
