2200: UC or UT7?

2200: UC or UT7?

2005-06-06 by michaelrosensf

I'm in the process of upgrading from my 1160s and piezography to a 2200 and QTR. I've
made several prints with the 2200, QTR and the UC inks delivered with the machine (I did
replace the Photo black with Epson Matte black.) and need to think about buying more ink.

For grayscale printing, with warmish toned inks on matte paper, would I see better results
with Epson UC inks or the MIS UT7 inks? For me "better" means smooth tonal transitions,
with deeper blacks and dot-less highlights secondary concerns, but I welcome other
definitions.

(Ignore that the UC inks allow printing color.)

Michael,

Some months ago, I did a side by side test with my 2100 on photorag
because I wanted to make a final choice between the two inksets:

I printed a BW pictures with a wide tonal range:
1. UT7 + Epson driver
2. UC + Eboni black + QTR RIP

My conclusion: remarkable how difficult to see any difference in
tonal range, shadows etc. Both dotless.
And if there was a small difference, I was always able to correct it
with some adjustment of levels/curves etc.

So I choose for UC + Eboni because I had value for the color option.

Renee,

I looked on the QTR & MIS sites & also googled eboni + ultrachrome, but didn't find info
on the way you're working. Could you explain at greater length how you're combining
inks? You use QTR with MIS Eboni in one of the black slots of a 21/2200, & UC inks in the
other slots - and the regular QTR tone curves for the particular paper?

Thanks,
Kirk

Kirk,

Exactly. I use MIS Eboni in the black slot as a replacement of the
standard Ultrachrome Matte black, and standard Epson Ultrachrome
carts in the other slot. Then print with the QTR profiles of your
choice with the blending of your choice, that are part of the QTR
software package.

Matte black will also work, but I use Eboni because it is less
warmer then the Epson matte black, is slighlty better with respect
to D-max and Archival qualities (and just because I still have some
carts on stock).

Regards, René
