Nobody uses QuadtoneRIP for Canvas?

Nobody uses QuadtoneRIP for Canvas?

2007-03-28 by cosmoelsol

Hi,

I have posted a thread about a week ago regarding using QuadtoneRIP
to print on Canvas but haven't gotten any response so far.

Is it correct to assume that NOBODY in this forum has ever tried
this combination? I can hardly imagine that.

Again, I plan to use QuadtoneRIP (Windows) to make BW print on HM
FineArt Canvas with my Epson 7600 UC.
Since there are no curves available for this combination, I am
curious to know what the best settings are (media, curves) to get
decent results. I do not plan to create curves on my own because the
process is too cumbersome and costly too.
Would it even make a difference (for Canvas) or I am fine using
canned profile with QImage? I know that there are very good profiles
from Bill Atkinson for Epson Premier WR Canvas which I can use in
QImage or PS.

However, for the folks that don't use QuadtoneRIP to print BW on
Canvas, what software/profiles/setting do you use?

Any hint/recommendation is highly appreciated.

Thanks,
Thai

You may be correct in assuming no one on this list uses canvas paper.
I don't anyway.

I'm not even sure whether the paper you want to use is matte or
glossy. You could try using a curve for another paper. For example if
your paper has a matte finish, you could try a HPR or EEM curve. If
it's glossy, then use a curve for a glossy paper. Of course you're
limited by the curves available for your printer. You may have to then
adjust the ink limit or other ink settings in QuadtoneRIP to account
for the paper differences.

As for media settings, I always leave them at the default (matte
paper, I think). The curve accounts for the differences in paper type.

Another thing you could try is to post your question on the following
list. There are a number of QTR users there too:

i so happen to have brialliance oba free textured fine art canvas (by breathing color) in a
roll but have never thought of using it. it's been on the shelf for over a year. i notice that it
gradually turns warm from white a few months after printing on it.

i could give it a try on mine just out of curiosity. but which canvas are you refering to;
which printer and ink set are you using?

my setup is on a mac.
epson 4800
piezography k7 neutral ink set

Thanks you all!

At least I have to replies now. :-)

Dan, my setup is epson 7600 ultrachrome, using windows.

Tom, the canvas I plan to use is Hahnemuehle FineArt or Epson Premier
WR, both are matte.
I have thought to use the Epson Enhanced Matte curve or HM Photorag.

Well, ater all this means that I have to find it out on my own.

Oh sure all the time on a 9600.

I use Textured Fine Art for the media setting with MK and use H.
Photorag curves since I've been to lazy to make curves for the
Frederick 901 WR yet. Works wonderfully. Within a few minutes I can
give my clients about 3 easily repeatable hues to choose from - like
neutral, warm, sepia. It's great. QTR is great and so versatile on the
fly.

All I can say is that I think it's Yahoo. It doesn't happen to all
posts. The worst case is John Deans recent post that was entered in
the list 5 times. Others have been 2 or 3.

Looking at the posting log, when multiple posts appear, there are
multiple log entries, as if the poster had sent the message several
times. In my case I KNOW I sent my post only once. I can't imagine
John sent his 5 times. Since it happens from several sources, the only
common element is Yahoo. The phenomenon (if I can call it that) is
happening on other lists such as B&W the print.

You may be fortunate in receiving only two duplicates of a message.

I have been getting one, two, three and four duplicates. A few moments
ago, eleven duplicates were delivered for one message.
Since I subscribe to several lists, I thought the duplications might
occur with Quadtone RIP alone. Not so. The duplicates occur,
sporadically, for messages from all lists.

I can't imagine that someone at Yahoo hopes to be generous by initiating
duplicates. However, with the problem occurring
on several Yahoo lists, the difficulty must be caused by Yahoo. Have
they been hacked?

Hi...new here, just downloaded QuadtoneRIP yesterday. Just wanted to
chime in here & thank you John for your info. I'm actually printing a
b/w photo manip right this very moment on Epson canvas using my 7600
& your settings are working without a hitch - looking WONDERFUL! I've
had such a pain in the past 2 years printing b/w & am in love with
this RIP.

Thanks again!

Hi Christina,

Since I own an Epson 7600 too I am curious on
which Epson Canvas you are using (There is the normal and the
Premier) and which are the settings in Quadtone (media, curves etc.).

Thanks,

Re: Nobody uses QuadtoneRIP for Canvas?

Glad it works for you.

If you find you would like a greater dmax, like with something that
has a large black background or something, try the Watercolor media
setting. I've tested all the media settings and, at least with rag
papers, it has the best dmax. However, with my canvas I don't need it
with MK.
