Newbie help: Create New Ink/Paper profile in QuadtoneRIP

Newbie help: Create New Ink/Paper profile in QuadtoneRIP

2007-03-29 by alan9990_6

Hi all,

I've been using a profiled colour Epson printer for a while now but
this is my first attempt to get serious with Black and White. So
please be gentle with me - I'm just proceeding with caution.

I've installed the software and read both the user guide and the pdf
on calibration but fear I must have missed something.

Basically I want to create a profile to allow me to use a small gamut
ink set (Lyson Small Gamut - 5 'greys' plus the printer black
cartridge) with a range of papers. I can probably handle adapting the
one initial profile to various papers, but the instructions as I've
read them leave me confused.

I am instructed thus:

"Start with one of the existing printer and ink combinations in the
Example-Inks folder. Duplicate the file and edit it to produce a
complete quadtone curve set. This a simple plain text file that has a
very simple format. Lines beginning with # are just comments and are
ignored. All the important lines are simply VARIABLE=value. The
variables are all given, the only changes that you should make are the
values."

By 'example inks folder" I take it is meant the C:\Program
Files\QuadToneRIP\Profiles folder?

So if I open one of these *.qidf files in a text editor, I am
confronted with a whole bunch of parameters. How on earth am I
expected to know which values to place in there?

Or have I already gone wrong? I have a decent ink set - widely
recognised if not installed by default with the software. I'm getting
a PrintFix Pro kit delivered, so will be able to measure outputs etc.

Can someone please point me in the right direction so that I can print
out the Ink Pattern test page for my particular ink set?

Thanks

hello alan,

which epson model are you using? i use the epson 4800 so i use the inkseperation.psd
file.

i'm assuming you're using QTRgui. did you install the latest version of QTRgui?
you can pick up the latest version here: http://www.quadtonerip.com/qtrpc/
QTR_Setup_2.5.1.EXE.

while you're there, also pick up the User Guide by Tom Moore here: http://
www.quadtonerip.com/User%20Guide.pdf. this user guide is for QTRgui. i use QTR for the
mac and i still found some useful information here. there is plenty of reading but be
patient. you'll find most of the information here.

don't forget to check out the following Files area where you might find some helpful tools:
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/QuadtoneRIP/files/Curves/
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/QuadtoneRIP/files/Docs/
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/QuadtoneRIP/files/Tools/

if this is not old news already, i hope this is helpful.

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for that.

I'm using an Epson 1290.

I've literally only bought the RIP tonight so it's fully up to date. I am attempting to use the QTRgui and I'm currently reading the gui help files and all the other documentation you list.

I will be using the spectrometer from the PrintFix Pro kit (when it arrives). I'm not exactly chomping at the bit to print right now - but I want to have a thorough read through of documentation before I start printing out using this ink set - since mistakes can prove costly at this stage.

I feel that even with the information provided it seems to assume a level of familiarity with the software that I obviously don't have.

What I did was to open the QTR gui and selected one of the inbuilt 'sets' for printer and ink because obviously my particular ink/paper combination isn't listed. So I picked the Quad1290-K6. Of course when I printed out the Ink limit test, the inks came out listed for that set - (of course). So although I now have a page with six ink level tests printed on it, saving this later on seems irrelevant since the names don't match - and it was designed for eight inks.

If I'm doing something fundamentally wrong, then that's fine - but it's a case of not really knowing how/where to start.

Alan

Re: Newbie help: Create New Ink/Paper profile in QuadtoneRIP

since you're creating your own curves, then the first thing is to print the Ink Seperation
Test Page. which you're trying to do. if you have not yet gotten to the user guide, please
go to page 11 "Creating and Editing Curves with QuadToneRIP".

when you've printed this test page, let it dry for about an hour or more. visually estimate
the ink limit of the K ink only. i know the guide suggests otherwise, but K ink is all you
need to estimate. if you can visually indentify the ink patch that's in between the lighter
and the darker, then that's the ink limit. you don't need to be precise here.

i use QTR on a mac so the procedure is somewhat different. i suggest you read the
"Creating and Editing Curves with QuadToneRIP".

the goal here is to identify the ink limit so that you can print the Ink Seperation Test Page
again based on this ink limit. let this print dry for somewhere between 2 and 4 hours
before doing any measurements. this is the stage where you will need your spectrometer.

i have made a file for myself to help me identify the ink limit but i'm not sure how QTRgui
prints. in QTR for the mac, i print this file by selecting calibration mode. this file is located
here: http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/QuadtoneRIP/files/Tools/
Ink_Limit_Pattern_Page.zip

i hope this answers your question.

Re: [QuadtoneRIP] Re: Newbie help: Create New Ink/Paper profile in QuadtoneRIP

2007-03-30 by Alan Ansell

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for helping on this. Due to the relative lateness of the hour I don't think I explained it all very clearly. Let me try to use the QTR terms.
My problems appear to stem from the fact that from the first moment I opened the software, I was prompted to select a printer. I have two connected so naturally I opted for the one on my system for B&W. This in itself caused a program error which persists - access code violation. I guessed this was due to the use of the & (ampersand?) in the printer name. I've since renamed it but the error persists in slightly different form.
Having selected the printer I was further prompted to select the inks. On the basis of the fact that I would be creating a new Ink and Paper combo. I felt this was not a critical step so I chose K6.
After your earlier reply the penny dropped slightly so I selected the inkseparation6.tiff from the bin folder. This is the correct ink set up for my printer. I loaded this into the RIP under the current printer Model but when I selected Calibration Mode several things happened: Firstly, after initiating the several .exes quadtoprinter; Rawprint etc, the program returned a simple error message: I/O error. Although it continued to print - the software simply defaulted to printing the calibration test sheet for the model loaded - in this case the K6 ink set - which as stated has eight ink channels. I don't think this is useful because even if I disregard the two unused channels, last night's print out shows just the black ink channel reaches its limit at 30%. This is not true for the other five inks.
I'm going to reinstall this software - thereby hopefully overwriting this installation and resetting my starting point (I cannot discover how to actually reload a 'new' printer model. I seem to be stuck with this erroneous first choice).
As I say - I know it's new software and there is a learning curve attached but it does seem to be slightly less than completely user friendly. Trust me - I've read everything twice by now :0)

ok... i understand now.

this is a QTRgui matter so i'll leave this one to the other QTRgui users.

Hi Alan,

I'm not expert enough to give you a definitive answer, but as another
Lyson user I thought I would add my little bit. I don't often see
the "L-word" mentioned in this group!

I am using the Lyson Quad Black neutral, not the Small Gamut set and
I believe they will be very different in QTR. I was having problems
getting decent prints with the QB set until I discovered QTR - now I
can print on glossy paper and easily achieve a Dmax greater than 2
without losing shadow detail. Even on matt (fine art) paper I can get
a really good black, so I'm very pleased with the Lyson ink set now.

It seems to me though that the SG set will be completely different in
that you only have one true "grey" - that is the black ink. To keep
the tone (chromaticity) consistent across the full density range you
would have to use at least one of the "grey" inks at all densities.
As I understand QTR this would only happen if you called the grey ink
a "toner". Or am I missing the point?

I was considering changing to the SG set before QTR solved my
problems with the QB, and then I was struggling to see how QTR would
handle the SG. I guessed that you would have to generate three
separate curves, one for each "toner" and then combine then in
different proportions at the print stage to get the tone you want.
Can one of the real experts help? I would still like to try the SG
set if it can compete with my Quad Black.

Re: [QuadtoneRIP] Re: Newbie help: Create New Ink/Paper profile in QuadtoneRIP

2007-03-30 by Alan Ansell

Hi Roger,
Aah - I'm not the only one! I was beginning to think I was on something of a fool's quest :0)
Actually the SG were recommended over the quad black by my reseller as giving better prints for the 1290.
But I think you can help me. Although on about the fourth reading the documentation is slowly starting to make sense, what I'm trying to work out is what you've presumably already achieved: Namely that of creating a complete printer and paper model for these inks. Since they're not listed by default, I'm having trouble understanding how I do this.
At the moment your suggestions re curves are a bit ahead of where I'm at right now. I'm still trying to get the software configured to my liking.
I've printed an ink separation sheet and set an ink limit. As soon as I get my spectrometer plugged in I'll be able to start measuring.
As I understand the SG set, indeed it contains no true greys. I believe it was designed to use what are effectively highly diluted CYM with LC LM inks which when mixed, will produce close to neutral greys.
Thing is - at this moment in time, I'm not able to experiment because I'm still struggling to understand what I do with the information derived from the ink limit testing. Into which profile does this information go - I presume I have to create this profile/printer data?
Once I'm up and running and have got something that looks like a known image, I'll be more than happy to share any discoveries on here.

Subject: {SPAM 04.2} [QuadtoneRIP] Re: Newbie help: Create New Ink/Paper profile in QuadtoneRIP

Hi Alan,
I'm not expert enough to give you a definitive answer, but as another
Lyson user I thought I would add my little bit.
I would still like to try the SG
set if it can compete with my Quad Black.

the QTR terms.

I opened the software, I was prompted to select a printer. I have two
connected so naturally I opted for the one on my system for B&W. This
in itself caused a program error which persists - access code
violation. I guessed this was due to the use of the & (ampersand?) in
the printer name. I've since renamed it but the error persists in
slightly different form.
> Having selected the printer I was further prompted to select the
inks. On the basis of the fact that I would be creating a new Ink and
Paper combo. I felt this was not a critical step so I chose K6.
> After your earlier reply the penny dropped slightly so I selected
the inkseparation6.tiff from the bin folder. This is the correct ink
set up for my printer. I loaded this into the RIP under the current
printer Model but when I selected Calibration Mode several things
happened: Firstly, after initiating the several .exes quadtoprinter;
Rawprint etc, the program returned a simple error message: I/O error.
Although it continued to print - the software simply defaulted to
printing the calibration test sheet for the model loaded - in this
case the K6 ink set - which as stated has eight ink channels. I don't
think this is useful because even if I disregard the two unused
channels, last night's print out shows just the black ink channel
reaches its limit at 30%. This is not true for the other five inks.

overwriting this installation and resetting my starting point (I
cannot discover how to actually reload a 'new' printer model. I seem
to be stuck with this erroneous first choice).

attached but it does seem to be slightly less than completely user
friendly. Trust me - I've read everything twice by now :0)

Re: Newbie help: Create New Ink/Paper profile in QuadtoneRIP

2007-03-30 by Tom Moore

Alan

SG is essentially a colour inkset (albeit with reduced gamut) with a
single black. Since QTR is not a colour RIP, I suspect you might have
more success with the SG inks using the Epson driver and the Lyson ICC
profiles. Once you receive Printfix you will be able to create your
own ICC's for the paper you want to use (again for use with the Epson
driver).

I could be wrong of course, but with a single black it does not seem
practical to construct curves in the manner QTR permits with the Epson
Ultrachrome inkset with 2 or 3 blacks. The other alternative is to
construct magenta and cyan curves blended with black and then combine
these curves with yellow to create something near neutral. That sounds
to me like one would be trying to do manually what a colour RIP would do.

Sorry to sound so negative about your venture. Perhaps someone else
has discovered a way to do what you want and will chime in. If you do
decide to continue with QTR and the Lyson SG inks, please keep us
posted as to your progress.

Alan,

As Tom has mentioned the inks were pretty tailored for the Epson color driver.
(you mentioned someone had recommended them -- did they also recommend
a workflow/driver for using them?)

You could use QTR for them but I think you'll be using the light color inks to
simulate the gray tones of the image. This would involve some trial to get the
"neutral" that you want. One way to do this is create 3 curves -- C,M,Y and
blend them with the QTR printing blend sliders. All this is a little
more involved
to get a neutral tone balance.

Other approaches are 1) to use Print Fix Pro software to create a
color ICC for the
Epson driver, 2) to use the color sliders in the Epson driver for tones.

Without having used the ink set I'm really not sure which will be easiest.

Re: [QuadtoneRIP] Re: Newbie help: Create New Ink/Paper profile in QuadtoneRIP

2007-03-30 by Alan Ansell

Hi Tom,

I take your comments on board. Sure, mine is not strictly a black ink set and I read the bit that said QTR was designed for quad black ink sets. Two things though: The cost of QTR made it worth the try - whichever way I go with my printing, B&W is here to stay - I can only go uphill from here. It seemed a good way to get my feet wet with black and white calibration so if I change my inks, I'll still be using QTR - might even understand it by then.

That's not to say I'm not going to continue trying. I also felt that because QTR contains some grey patches, just that alone would be invaluable should I indeed do as you suggest and create my own ICC's with my profiling kit.

It's all a learning curve and unfortunately I'm probably one of the world's worst when I come across a "that's not usually done" scenario :0)
I have been using the Epson drivers. They are okay but despite careful colour profiling, the inks in the SG don't relate to standard IT8s so I'm left fiddling with media settings and so forth to try to make improvements. And I'm sure you're only too aware of what an unrewarding experience it can be trying to get decent prints out of some of these older drivers. Lyson's site has a sheet which shows the casts along with the Hue and Saturation values - but I recently wrote to them to explain why my prints were not as neutral as theirs and roughly how far out it was. I'm waiting to see if they're going to bother replying with (it's been suggested) some Photoshop curves to bring the SG set back in line.
Added to the above is also the problem that although Lyson provide a free profile for their inks on their own paper - I do not wish to be tied to a single manufacturer of paper for my B&W prints. I note that Permajet will make me free custom profiles for this ink set for use with their papers - they have already confirmed this to me. So that's another option I have. But one of the things I've learned since I started getting more serious about ink jet printing is that there is always room for improvement. I have no desire to make my life more complicated, but to rely on a remote profiling service and then discover that I wish to swap to a new brand of paper or ink has cost implications way beyond the cost of buying this RIP and the PF Pro.
I'll be happy to let you know how I get on.

Yes, thanks Tom - I see what you're saying. But you've highlighted the problem that bods like me have - bods who don't have access to high end equipment for making prints - that I have to buy an ink set and then 'fit and forget' and hope that it comes out okay.

The moment I fitted the SG inks (no, there's no recommended workflow. You simply do as you suggest - set the render intent in Photoshop and set the paper/print res in the Epson driver and turn off ICC management. Thing is it made a fine job of the first B&W photo I printed. But the results are not consistent.
The idea of the SG set is exactly as you say - to combine all the five colour inks (they really are drab. The yellow is almost grey) to produce neutral grays. The reason I was interested in doing it in QTR is because rather than have an 'off' print using the standard driver and then apply a curve to try to fix it, I wanted to test the ink limits. I've been told (and have seen to some extent) that these printers when used with standard settings put down too much ink. So my colours may be off not because they can't produce neutral greys, but because the Epson driver is putting down too much ink. However much fiddling it might take, once I find a benchmark with QTR, I can then have total control over deliberate casts. I can then decide whether that suffices for my needs or whether to move up to 'better' full grey ink sets.
At the moment I want to try everything and see what works best. Even just your gray profiles installed on my system are a huge boon in Photoshop.

Re: Newbie help: Create New Ink/Paper profile in QuadtoneRIP

2007-03-30 by john dean

Two things.

First as someone who used the Lyson Quad Black inkset and then the
Small Gamut inkset for several years you should cut you losses and
move on to modern methods. To put it politely, these inks stink.
The metamerism alone, as well as the poor permanence of the "archival"
SG inks is enough without getting further into it. I had two clients
return neutral toned SG prints after 2 years because they turned brown.

Second, they are right, you need to be creating a color RGB ICC
Profile for the Small Gamut set, not attempting a greyscale rip
workflow. If you do go that SG route you need a decent color profiling
software and specrto to make the profiles. The newly designed
ColorVision PFP set up with the extened greys would neutralize the
SGAmut set well, but it will not remove the metamerism, the warming
under tungsten.

Personlly I wouldn't use these inksets again if they gave them to me.
There are just too many really good monochrome inksets available these
days that makes struggling with all that obsurd. Even Epson K2 or K3
with QTR is well beyond anything Lyson has unleashed on us.
