Paper Feed Ajustments in QTR

Paper Feed Ajustments in QTR

2007-05-23 by dflysons

I'm using MIS Pro inks in an Epson 4000. Recently I've noticed white horizontal banding less
than 1mm apart in my B&W QTR images. I'm printing on Crane Silver Rag at 2880,
unidirectional with PK black. It also happens on matte papers with MK. I've done a "puddle
clean" with Windex, cleaned the wiper arm and the surface of the print head. I then did
several control panel print head alignments. I now get a perfect nozzle check pattern
(examined with a loupe), but the lines are still there. I think I need to change the paper feed
adjustment. Does anyone know if there is a way to do that in QTR?

When I print the same image using the Epson driver with the paper feed adjustment at zero
(default) no white lines are present.

Don,

Here's some info i received. It made all the difference to me.
Best of Luck
Joe

Hi Joe,

The banding is probably caused by one of two different things (or both):

1.. Missing nozzles in the nozzle check pattern will leave gaps in your
print, giving you white banding. Print a “manual” nozzle check pattern, and
look at it carefully for missing, or misplaced horizontal lines.
2.. Print head needs to be aligned to the paper you’re using. You can use
either side of the Epson paper, as long at it’s the right thickness.

Also, you should be feeding the paper from either the top (normal) paper
tray, or from the back paper feed slot. Apparently, feeding the paper from
the front of the printer can give problems.

Finally, if your print speed or quality setting is set to “faster” or
“bidirectional,” change it to “better,” or “unidirectional.”

Let me know if this helps.

Thanks,
Jeff

Joe,

Thanks for your ideas. I tried them, but I'm still getting the horizontal banding.
1. All the head alignments have been done using Crane Silver Rag.
2. The manual nozzle check examined with a loupe looks perfect to me.
3. When I print the 21 step gray scale with the Epson driver or ColorBurstRip, no horizontal
banding appears. Only QTR seems to have this problem. This makes me think it is a
paper feed adjustment problem.
4. The banding is worst at 2880, unidirectional. Both shadows and midtones are effected.
The same problem occurs with MK inks on matte papers, but to a lesser extent.
5. At 1440super unid', the banding is evident in the lighter midtones, not so bad in the
darker midtones or the shadows. If I can't solve this problem, I'll reprofile for 1440super.

Any other thoughts?

Don
