Using the Pulse Reader Utility

Using the Pulse Reader Utility

2007-08-01 by munn_photo

Hello,

I own a Xrite Pulse Elite spectrophotometer and I am interested in
using it to create curves for my Epson Pro 4000 with QTR. I see that
there is a utility that has been generously created and offered by a
memeber here to allow this to be done. I have downloaded the file and
unpacked it. I do not have my Pulse attached to the computer that I
downloaded it to or the software installed. I have clicked on the
application but it does not open. Do I need to have my Pulse attached
to the computer to open the Pulse Reader utility? Thanks in advance
for any assistance.

This utility works only connected with computer.

Please let me know if it will work for you -- others reported some
problems that I unfortunately cannot reproduce on any of my machines.
There is a small doc in the archive with that tool that explains a
little bit, how it works. You should start it from the console window
to see error messages -- when you run it from Windows Explorer and get
an error, OS will close the window before you could read, what was the
problem. I probably should modify it to keep it opened...

Oh, I forgot to mention that you also should have Pulse drivers
installed. To ensure this you could install any of X-Rite tools for
Pulse, or you could install just the driver.

Re: Using the Pulse Reader Utility

Thanks for the reply. I hooked up my pulse and the utility opened
for me but I was unable to use the commands that you indicated in
the read me file to switch to strip mode instead of spot reading.
You indicate that there is a firmware upgrade on the Xrite site
which allows you to swith to strip mode but I was unable to locate
this on the site. There is no such download for the DPT20.

I did however download the ColorPort utility which allowed me to
generate the TID and 21 gray step wedge to print out and then scan
with my pulse. I am still just trying to understand the process of
callibration and creating a custom curve to use with QTR. I still
have a bit of a learning curve to go through to understand the
complete process. I am not totally clear on all the specific steps.
Hopefully after reading several post and the different documentation
and guides I'm hoping it will all make more sense to me.

Thanks again for all your help.

Hello, Munn,

I am one of those for which operation of Sergei's utility does no work.

I have also had no success with ColorPort 1.5.4 . I don't pretend to
be a computer savvy person but I am doubting my capabilities! Since
you achieved results with ColorPort, I should appreciate it if you
could go throguh the steps for me so that I can read the strips
printed by QTR.

My desktop is a PC with WinXP pro service packs 1 and 2.

Thanks,

Colin Conway

It appears that the Pulse reader utility only works on PC's; has anyone tried it on a Mac (Intel based)? Will it work?

Thanks.

Mike

PulseReader is the Windows program. It will not work on Mac.

Just use the ColorPort utility to make a 21 step or 21x4 step neutral RGB target, then turn off
TID recognition when measuring the printed target. Export a tab delimited text file and read
with the QTR scripts for linearization or icc creation. See:

Carl,

Your post was in response to Michael Tiktinsky's but appeared to
address my problem. If I recall correctly, you use a Mac while I am
using a PC with Win XP Pro Service packs 1 and 2. I don't know if
this is significant.

I have printed out a grayscale TIF using QTR and the process described
by W Schwolgin in
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/QuadtoneRIP/files/Tools/ . He has
a text document file to insert patches in Colorport v1.5.4's create
target.

In the Measure Target area I have ticked the "ignore TID" box.
However, when I scan the scanned QTR TIF file I get the error message
"An error occurred while reading a strip of patches. Try reading the
strip again (error 22).

I have tried also using the TIF file overlain over the colour TID
("ignore TID" unticked), but get the error message "Mismatched data
Clear the Pulse and remeasure".

I should appreciate any help you, or anyone else using WinXp can give.

Colin

Colin,

I'm not sure what the problem is but it should work. Have you tried
reading the strip again after the error message at different scanning
speeds? I occasionally get this error if scanning too quickly.

Yes, Carl, many times.

I get normal colour readings in Pulse Elite, so I doubt it is the machine.

Thanks for your help.

I was able to install and run Sergei's utility on my notebook computer
(Win XPhome), although the pulsetreader.exe -? switch wouldn't work,
and I have been using this despite the inconvenience of swapping the
data outputs from the notebook to my imaging desktop PC running XP Pro
SP1&2.

Last night, pondering the issue yet again, I decided to try removing
the Pulse Color Elite software(I uninstalled ColorPort awhile back).

Yes, the utility now works, so maybe there is a conflict somewhere
here. Of course I have traded the inconvenience of swapping data from
notebook to desktop, to uninstalling the X-rite Pulse software and
back when I want to use the device for its intended purpose.

I should appreciate it if, Sergei, you would see if you can now
replicate the problem and find a solution.

Cheers,

Colin
