Digital Negatives on 3800

Digital Negatives on 3800

2007-08-06 by earthad24

I just bought a 3800 and downloaded QTR for making digital negatives.

I read through Ron Reeder's PDF on how to create your own profiles in QTR for digi negs. As
far as I can tell I followed his instructions exactly and created a test profile and attempted to
print his supplied step wedge on inkpress transparency. When I printed the first one, the ink
was laid down FAR to thick and it would simply smear off. My first thought was I printed on
the wrong side of the media, nope. (Also tried a sheet of OHP so I KNEW I had the right side,
same thing happened). Then I thought it had to do with the media type under printer
features. I tried transparencies and matte paper. Neither helped. Then I thought maybe it
was because I was trying to use matte ink on a glossy surface, so I switched inks, that didn't
help. I looked back to the profile text file and it looked ok to me, nothing was not set, or set
too high (at least to my eye, I'm knew at this). I reinstalled the profile and tried one more
time. Same thing, ink puddles that smeared easily. I even tried an ordinary positive print on
epson media using epson drivers just to rule out a problem with the printer. That print looks
lovely. So if you've acctually read through all this crap and have any advice I would love to
hear it.

Hi Andy,

I haven't done printing of negs but I know Ron and seen his work. He uses a
4000 printer instead of a 3800. This could account for different amount of
ink.
If its mainly an issue of too much ink then just reducing the ink limits
will fix it.
Another issue to check is that you use 2880dpi not 1440. I think the amount
of
ink is large compared to regular prints so it may need to dry before using.

You should try contacting Ron to see if he recognizes the issues you have.

Thanks Roy,

I had 2880 set. I think there is probably something fundamentlly wrong with the profile I
wrote because there was WAY to much ink put down; it smeared right off as if I printed on
the wrong side. I will contact Ron and see if he has any advice. Thank again.

Andy,

just want to inform you that I just printed a digital negative on OHP
with the 3800.
I used the settings: ABW,media: Premier Glossy Photo Paper and 2800
dpi

I measured a dmax of 2.42 and followed the procedure written down in
the book of Ron Reeder to make a correction curve for OHP. Only small
corrections where necessary Next step will be a print on Kentmere
document paper to make a print for bromoil.

remko,

The correction curve you made is that in photoshop, or did you actually edit the profiles
textfile?

Re: Digital Negatives on 3800

Hi Andy,

I made the corrections with a curve in PS. depending of the print
results on the Kentmere paper I will use QTR or not. I don't think
there is much to gain using QTR against the Epson AWB-driver because
of the process to come to the defenitive print that followes.
