I still need advice

I still need advice

2007-08-10 by tonyonmarian

I seriously want to buy this Rip but need some input first. I posted
the following 10 days ago and have had zero responses. Did my post
break some rule?

"I know that this august body may be slightly biased, but I would like
some input.

I currently own an Epson 3800 and have Imageprint as my RIP. I have a
friend that swears by the B&W quality of his Quadtone RIP. My question
then is what are the pros and cons of each. I would consider a second
purchase of this type of app since 50% of my output is in B&W, but I
also worry whether they could play nicely together on my Mac.

Tony"

The old hands here have been there and done that. This discussion has
been had over and over and over. Research the archives. Especially the

Tony,

I think you will find photographers who prefer Quadtone and others who prefer ImagePrint. It is a matter a of personal taste -- in the same way as paper choices or even chemical preferences in an old wet darkroom. There is no right answer -- except the one you decide is right for you.

Given that you already have ImagePrint, I would download the Quadtone and take it for a spin. It is a shareware so you do not have to pay anything up front to try it out. If you like it, you can send in a check.

One advantage to the Quadtone is cost. But seeing as how you already have ImagePrint, you'll be in a position of comparing the two print-by-print without worrying about making a choice based on cost.

Good luck.

Robert,

Thanks for your response. I will follow your advice and try a download.
Before I do that, how will the two play together? I don't want a Hatfield
vs. McCoys in my Mac.

Yet another good argument for a QuadtoneRIP book for beginners! (cf., the
"best way to learn/understand the process" thread)

Maybe one of the more enterprising of those "old hands" would be willing to
share his/her wisdom and experience by deigning to author a "QuadtoneRIP for
Dummies"-type book for us newbies. That would be worth an extra $50 to us
IMHO. :-)

Tony,

I have no idea about how they might conflict -- if at all. I will leave that question for some of the techies on here who know more about that sort of thing.

Tony - I currently use ImagePrint on my Epson 4800 for color and am
trying out Quadtone Rip with Piezography inks for B&W on my Epson
2200. So far, I like both. I still do some B&W prints on the 4800
with ImagePrint on Museo Silver Rag, but I don't want to switch inks
for a matte paper so I decided to convert the 2200 to B&W only for
use with matte papers. I can't help with the Mac question because I'm on PCs.

Richard,

What I was trying to ask was whether they could be both loaded on the Mac
HD, or if I would have to uninstall the one I was not using...issues with
drivers, etc.

For someone to answer your question they would have to have experience with
both programs. Maybe those of us on this list haven't indulged in the cost
of Imageprint. On the other hand, since you have Imageprint it would seem
possible for you to download and try QuadtoneRIP, which has a free
trial--and make the judgment yourself.

Those of us without the funds for Imageprint are awaiting your evaluation.

There is no problem or conflict loading several RIPS on the same computer. I
have IP QTR and QImage all loaded, and I use the RIP that is best for the
image I want to print.
