2nd try - How do you reduce the 100% patch.

2nd try - How do you reduce the 100% patch.

2008-01-04 by Richard Cooke

Hi Folks,

I originally posted this on Dec 30th but got no takers - so with
fingers crossed I'm trying this again.

I'm confused on how to reduce the amount of ink at the 100% patch
using the UT-3D inks on Costco glossy. I can't figure out how to make
a curve or ink definition (or whatever its called) myself so I copied
the UT7 IlSmoothPearl-warm.qidf and used that as a starting point.

I printed the Step-21-gray.tif file and looked at the output. It
looks to me that the 100% patch has too much ink on it since it got on
the rollers and it looked like it was puddling. So, my question to the
list is - how do I reduce the amount of ink?

The copied QIDF file has the following values:

Default Ink Limit= 80
Black Boost = 100
Black ink = not used
Cyan ink = Gray ink , Density = 100
Magenta = Toner, Density = 100, Limit = 80
Yellow = not used
Light Cyan = Gray ink, Density = 31.5
Light Magenta = Toner, Density = 30, Limit = 0
Light Black = not used

I hope this makes sense.

Thanks,

Hi Richard,
Basically to reduce the amount of ink, reduce the ink limit values and the
boost value.
I'd start by changing BOOST to 80 instead of 100, if that's not enough
then reduce all the 80's (LIMIT and BOOST).

In the 3D inkset the Magenta position ink can be used as a PKN. That is
what the profile you list below appears to be doing. So, the adjusting the
ink limit that is used for the Magenta ink may be the easiest way to reduce
the ink used.

I determine ink limits by printing a 21-step test file with a curve that is
simply a straight line using the particular ink I'm interested in - usually
the black ink. A straight line curve is made easily by entering the points
(0, 0) and (100, 100) in the Curve Creation Point List for the particular
ink. In the drop-down menu for Magenta in Curve Creation, hit Load
Curve>Curve>Point list, enter the end points and make a test profile with
the ink limit at 100. Use a spectro or just a flatbed scanner to see which
patch ends up the darkest. That can be your ink limit.

When you change that you may be changing the tones or other aspects of the
profile. So, it may need to be re-linearized.
