PROBLEM WITH EPSON 4800 AND QUAD TONE RIP

2008-01-03 by Carl Quedenfeld

Dear Quad Tone Group:
I am having problems with making Quad Tone Rip work with my Epson 4800. My Epson
4800 was working with the Epson downloaded drivers with color inks. I put in K7 sepia Pizeo
inks, power cleaned and then tried to print. I use PS CS3 with Mac G5 OS latest version
Leopard. I installed the K7 and UC profiles and the Leopard patch. I tried to print a b&w tiff.
I put the Epson k7 as my default printer. I then could see the various profiles in my print set
up windows for quad tone. I have selected various paper profiles but when it goes to the
print que it says o% complete the job disapears and it says the printer is ready.

What am I doing wrong ? any suggestions ? I took a workshop with Cone and am trying to
follow how they told me to set up the print set up pages but it still is not working for some
reason. I appreciate any help !
Thanks in advance

Hi Carl and anyone else upgrading to Leopard.

Leopard upgrade does not preserve printer drivers for QTR entirely,
so (3), (4) are probably the issue for you.

To make things work on a Leopard upgrade there are a couple of things you
need to do:

1) download version 2.5.2 plus the QTR-Patch for Leopard. See
www.quadtonerip.com
2) install 2.5.2 first and then install the patch.
3) Delete the old Quad4800-K7 using Print&Fax pane of System Prefs.
4) From the download re-run Profiles/4800-K7/Install4800-K7 (or whatever
printer/ink you use)

Then you should be back in business.

The latest Mac OS X version name. It's also called 10.5.1 currently.

Carl -

I have the 4880 working with QTR with no problems, but I am using it
in standard Quad4800 mode.

I read a post in the DigitalBlackandWhitePrint forum that there are
differences between the chips on 4880's and 4800s. The post indicated
removing 4800 chips and putting them onto the 4800 cartridges was the
way to make K7 work on a 4880. I haven't tried it yet (too chicken!).

I would try printing with Quad4800 with Cone K7 cartridges and
standard Epson 4880 cartridges. I sent an email to InkJetMall about
the compatibility of their refillable cartridges and got a very non-
committal answer. Makes me wonder...

I'd be very interested in hearing about the results of this test if
you try it. I have almost $1300 of k7 ink and refillable 4800
cartridges that I haven't used because I don't want to waste the money
if there are basic compatibility problems.

Good Luck!

Mike

Mike,
Thanks for sharing your experiences ! I did try what Roy suggested
and it is now working fine with my 4800. I took a basic workshop in
b&w printing with Larry Danque at Cone workshop. I am trying to
follow up with some of the instruction in printing my work and it
seems to be going fine so far although I get confused at times. I did
some color printiing prior to setting up the K7 sepia inks from Cone
and things went fine with that.
