getting started with QT and Inkjetmall K7 inks

getting started with QT and Inkjetmall K7 inks

2005-08-16 by spsguru

I am new to QT. I am trying it as it is the RIP to use with the new
InkjetMall Epson 2200 K7 inks.
So far I am not happy at all with the output as it states I need to
go to Gamma 2.2
Once I do that the image looks as if it takes on a green cast -
sounds weird I know.
Also there is poor tonal transitions.
So ... do I need to calibrate, add curves, etc....
I am following the directins for choices in the drop down boxes - but
I do not understand
where I need to choose different profiles. There is only one curve to
choosse frm - K7 2880
beta

I am not sure how to proceed as I follow the directions in the
printout sent with the inkset -
and quality is very inferior to Imageprint - any help would be
appreicated

Sean,

The QTR K7 profiles are listed for down loading here http://homepage.mac.com/royharrington/FileSharing3.html . Also try using the newer version of QTR that is listed at that link.
Are you on a Mac or a PC? If on a PC, simply work up your grayscale image as you normally work, then when you're ready to print, convert the image from you're working grayspace to Gray Gamma 2.2 and save as a Tiff. Open the saved file in QTR and use the print settings in the K7 instructions.
I'm curious to hear you're impressions of these inks. I just received mine, but since I'll be out of town for a while, I'm not going to load them up until I get back.

QT and Inkjetmall K7 inks for 6 ink printers

2005-08-17 by john dean

Does anyone know if these curves with some modifications are usable
for 6 ink Epson printers? If not are curves going to be available for
them as well?

John

Is it always advisable to save TIFFS in Gray Gamma 2.2 before
shuffling them off to QTR (I use QTRGui)? Thanks.

Will - thanks for the pointer. With these curves the outcome was
better. I ordered the Bradford trail pack fo paper - and the Bradford
curves did improve the print.

I have to say at this point for me it still is not worthy of the
investment above IP6 - but - I am new to QTR and if I can leave how to
tweak the curves that may change. IP is just so easy
Thanks again for the help

Apparently the K7 print curves for QTR were designed for images either worked up using Gray Gamma 2.2 or converted to GG 2.2. But with Ultrachromes and the UC print curves, I've gotten great results using the QTR GrayLab icc profile.

Re: [QuadtoneRIP] Re: getting started with QT and Inkjetmall K7 inks

Sean
QTR has two global adjustments for tonal control: Ink Limit and Gamma. Ink Limit will increase or decrease the density of the print primarily in the shadows, and to a lesser extent, a bit in the mids. Gamma will increase or decrease the density of the mids, making the print appear darker or lighter. These are very practical adjustments to use when you don't have custom curves created specifically for your personal printer and you need to bump things into place. Beyond this, there's the QTR Curve Creation program but you'll need a densitometer or spectro to use it (I think it may work ok with a flatbed scanner, too).
Hope this helps,
Will

Hi John,

I'm not sure if the inks would be usable but I do know that Conetech
is considering producing a Neutral K6 line of inks if there is enough
demand for it. You might want to add your voice to the requests. If
you go to http://www.inkjetmall.com/store/bw2/piezography-neutral-
k7.html#questionaire you can fill out a questionaire they've
provided. For more info, just check their site.

It looks like the link got broken when I sent the last email. Try copying and pasting the following,

Jon said when I asked this question that yes, you just can leave out
one of the dark grey channels. Now how this would affect dmax I have
no idea. That element worries me because the sample I received of the
K7 had poor blacks to begin with. However, I am not going to judge
this probably very fine system by that sample I received.

Re: QT and Inkjetmall K6 inks

You can leave out the 4th shade to make a K6 set.

The sample prints we produce have very little black if any in them as we go for a sample
image which has maximum linearization of tone from 0-255. So since 0 is dMax (black)
we try and show off the separation in the curves we produce with detail in 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8
and so forth all the way to dMin or paper white at 255. Photographers appreciate our
highlights but seem to miss huge blacks. We like the shadows open as much as possible
because its not possible with conventional silver paper. Hence there are very few true
black pixels in the image. We should have probably included a gray scale and a black
patch.

regards,

Jon Cone

Makes sense to me as long as the dmax is about the same as the
selenium tone set I will probably go for it.
Thanks,

John
