QTR SET UP

QTR SET UP

2009-05-05 by paussajim

I'm looking for where I might have made a mistake in the initial set after I downloaded the QTR software. I assume I can use an included paper profile and begin printing but I can't access any curves.

Printer Epson 4000
QTR 2.6.2
G4 running 10.4.11
PS CS2

QTR is installed in applications and I went under "Profiles" to 4000 UC and ran the "Install 4000" command. I then dropped the text files for the Illuminata paper that I'm using on to the create ICC program. I moved that profile in with all of my other profiles (Library/Color Sync/Profiles

I followed everything I could in the QTR Tutorial. I assume I don't have to make a custom profile at this point.
File is grayscale/TIFF
The printer is USB connected
Color Management:
Page Setup: Printer is Quad4000 and paper is Letter Centered
Let PS determine colors
Profile: QTR_UCmk IPhoto Rag

2nd window of print preview:
I can choose" Mode-QuadTone Rip" and this is the point where I can't access the curves that are in this window.

I guess I'm trying to figure out where I might have missed something. Thanks in advance.

JP, are you saying there are no curves in the Curves1, 2 and 3 boxes? If so I would try re-installing again. My memory on Tiger is a little hazy but I think the Epson portion of the driver is close enough to the Leapord version for government work. It sounds like things are OK. When you ran the Install 4000-UC command were all of the txt versions of all the profiles(curves) in that same folder including the The illuminata alpha smooth, assuming that is the paper you are using.

I'm a bit confused by your post as well. Did you print a stepwedge through the illuminata profile with QTR to get the text file for the ICC profile but now you are unable to print through QTR. You can try using the QTR_Gray_matte_paper profile and see if that works. That would normally be the profile (curve) you use in order to print a stepwedge through QTR to get the txt file to build the ICC profile for softproofing.

Robert-
There are no curves to choose from. I didn't print a stepwedge etc. I only read the tutorial. I don't see where it mentions doing anything with stepwedges or creating profiles. I did end up doing a re install. Nothing changed.

Maybe I just need instructions on how to use the software, ie. making a profile if that's what I'm supposed to do. Am I missing some pages from the tutorial?

Anyway, I have a folder of text files for all kinds of papers in my 4000 UC folder. I just don't know what to do with them, I guess. If you can point me to any basic instructions that would be appreciated.

No, you don't need to make profiles that is why I am confused about your taking text files and dropping them into Create ICC.

To start from the beginning. I assume you have a 4000 with Ultrachrome inks. Make sure the printer is turned on and connected by USB not Firewire. Go to Applications>QuadToneRIP>Profiles>4000UC. When you are in that folder double click on the Install4000.command. That will install a printer named Quad4000.

Choose an image in PhotoShop. Follow the usual print commands starting with Print. At the first Print page make sure Quad4000 is chosen in Printer, then choose Photoshop manages colors, for Printer Profile choose QTR_Gray_Matte_Paper (if indeed you are using matte). Select Perceptual for Rendering Intent and check Black Point Compensation, then hit Print. On the next page make sure Quad 4000 is again chosen under Printer, then go to the box that will have defaulted to Layout, choose Quadtone RIP, make sure you are in Mode:Quadtone RIP. You should then be able to choose the curves listed under Curves 1, Curves 2, and Curve 3. If you choose more than one curve the blending sliders to the left will activate. Good Luck!
