I can't find any reference on this list as to why QTR is not being developed for the recent Epson machines. Are they locking out third party software now? What IS going on with them? john

I wonder what happened with QTR?

Same as always. What did you have in mind? Roy

Epson changed the protocol for the driver to communicate with the printers. (Old one was called ESC/P2 -- new one is ESC/P3). It's very different from what I can see. The printers you mention use it. I did contact them with a request for info. But after a short interaction about why I needed the info, they never replied again. Roy

Roy, Is this a ded-end in your view? Or can it be hacked in time? I would think that even if you don't use 3rd party inks, QTR would a competitive advantage for Epson because of its sheer versatility for custom toning. Without QTR, Epson is a less compelling option than the newer Canons (and perhaps HPs). Is there a split-toning feature coming for ABW in future driver updates? Time to buy up X880 printers to mothball. Sometimes there is no accounting for business decisions! Shilesh --- In QuadtoneRIP@yahoogroups.com, Roy Harrington <roy@...> wrote:

Eric Edmondson and I are developing a loose set of techniques for matching any split-tone print from any bw print system (silver or digital) using modern inkjet printers and correct software (1880, z3200, etc) The software we have tested them on have been ColorBurst and StudioPrint but with a good RGB driver and a good modern inkjet printer there is no reason why these methods wouldn't work on anything. We will be publishing the methods at labography.com soon (once I get done with my classes this semester) and will be soliciting people to give us LaB data or silver/digital gray-ramp prints so we can build an archive of print hue/luminance values before silver is completely "dead." If you want to get a jump on it, our conversation can be found at Digital BW the Print. Hopefully this will help a bit on the lack of QTR support for the 11880. Thank you Walker. I will look at the B/W forum. I have not done any darkromm printing/toning to speak of. But I really enjoy the possibilities with mixing my own inks and toning options independent of past darkroom techniques - just getting a visually pleasing effect that harmonizes well with each paper white. I find that is the key, i.e., print hue that complements paper color, rather than fights against the paper color. Shilesh --- In QuadtoneRIP@yahoogroups.com, Walker Blackwell <forums@...> wrote:
