Epson 3880: OEM vs Cone inks

Epson 3880: OEM vs Cone inks

2010-09-25 by braddow@ymail.com

These days, even former proponents of Cone Systems inks seem to be asserting that an Epson 3880 with OEM inks produce b/w results comparable to that printer with Cone inks. (I'd probably go with the "Piezography K8 Warm Neutral Matte & Glossy System". Does anyone have direct experience with going from a best effort to make the Epson OEM inks work to the Cone Inks, especially using the latest matte/gloss sets. If so, I'd love to hear about your experience.

I'm not so sure about the Cone inks. But look at this review that I saw on 3800 inks: www.inkquisitor.wordpress.com

I'm afraid I don't have a 3880 but I do have a 3800 with Epson K3 inks and several 4000's with Cone K7 inks. My experience so far is limited to matte papers, however I don't think that the K3 3800 can touch the K7 4000's for quality - the K7 tones are smoother. I'm going to be fitting the warm neutral glossy K7 inks to yet another 4000 shortly so it will be interesting to see how it compares, however my money is on the Cone set.

I would agree the Cone inks are consistently better than the OEM for BW - I use an Epson 7600 and a 1400 for most of my work BW work and a 4800 for color, Up until this summer my experience was only with the matte papers, did a workshop at Cone editions and will be setting up a 2400 and an 800 with inksets for glossy papers in the near future. I have been able to compare the same image printed with OEM using QTR, OEM using Epson ABW and the Cone K7 inksets side by side by side, and the Cone ink prints are visually both closer to neutral, and richer in shadow detail, and using the Cone curves provided in QTR, print with smoother transitions - Just a note - one can print all the stepwedges one wants, and measure them over and over - all you will really have will be a confirmation that your printer and profile are more or less working as they should be - the real proof is in printed image

That may very well be the case, but how do the inks perform in terms of
longevity? I suggest that one reviews the information from Aardenburg Imaging
(If you don't belong, it is a good excuse to join). Anyhow, compared to OEM,
the Cone B&W inks don't demonstrate the same kind of longevity.
