Creature Combos Questions

Creature Combos Questions

2008-12-15 by b3nnysf

Hi everybody, I have been on the fence for a long time about weather
to get a Serge Creature + another undecided M-odule in a M-boat or get
a 4 module Buchla 200e in a Buchla boat. I have thought of every
possible sound configuration possible and well, I'm terribly excited
about the options!! So here are some questions I've been coming up with:

(keep in mind, I love analog so the Serge is winning the debate)

*1. creature and triple filter = oowey goodness, feedback and thick tone

*2. creature and triple osc = mega tones, FM madness

*3. creature and quad slope = FM tones, insane modulation

4. creature and gator = rhythm box, strange tones

5. creature and sys interface = plucky guitar follower

6. creature and wave proc = mega distortions, radical tones

I have no modular experience aside from playing with an EML 200, which
was limited but fun at the same time.. The Buchla box I dreamed up
seems fun also, but the 1 volt per octave scheme would work better
with the Roland crap kicking around my studio...

Have I overlooked something valuable? Tell me what you think about
those combos compared, * are main ones im thinking about... Thanks for
helping!!!

I have already asked on AH about serge and buchla, so those comments
are also apreciated and I reguard all your info on both modular
systems very highly!!!

Hi Ben

Owning both Serge and Buchla ( I love them both) The Serge sounds like
your best option. The Buchla 200e is somewhere inbetween digital and analog.

for maximum flexibility in a single Serge m-boat, i would go for the Creature + Quad Slope m-odules.

I second the Creature + Quad Slope. Between the 4 Slope Generators and the SSG, both of which are massively patch-programmable, you can concoct the widest variety of topologies in the most compact form factor.

isn't the Buchla 1.2 v/oct?

Yes, but it's a simple scaling operation in one direction, and a
fairly simple gain stage in the other direction.

Welcome, Ben!

Not to disparage the awesome M-class, but if you have the resources
available for the examples you offered, why not consider...

The Animal = oowey goodness, feedback, FM madness, insane modulation,
boxed/unboxed rhythm, and tones which can be thick, mega, distorted,
plucky, strange, radical, even downright pretty (one you left out)

It's a great way to get to know the core Serge palette, and you can
add M-odules to your heart's content as you grow more familiar with
what floats your boat. I believe it would be comparable in price to
the other systems you mentioned.

Re: Creature Combos Questions

I just have to throw my hat in to this subject also...I feel every Serge system should have a TKB!
Maybe after you have two M-class modules but at least think about some sequencer in the setup. It makes things easier to animate and it's less necessary to always be tweaking knobs for that morphing sound goodness.

Peace,
Kylee

Re: Creature Combos Questions

i'd like to second that consideration and also remind that with any shop panel such as the Animal you'd also get more panel density; each M-odule gives you 7-inches worth of module space (with a total of 14 for the boat), but you get 16 on a shop panel..

.. and welcome to the list Ben :-)

Hey Chris and gang,

Thanks for pointing that out!!! Yes, I too love the animal, or at
least the idea of the animal, because I've never heard one yet!! My
reasons for getting the creature + Quad slopes (Rex helped me decide
as well as you guys) are because I want a small modular set up,
flexible and compatible with my Roland 104 sequencer, Mooger control
processor, Marshall Time Modulator and Steiner-Parker Synthacon.

So why no animal? I wanted M-class for it's smaller assortment of
modules because I think I'll have a more "Ben-style" synth when its
all complete... I stared at the animal for hours, it's very balanced
and thought out for sure... I guess I just like that black module with
the blue light and the STS pyramid -- It's drawing me into the void
already!! reminds me of the floating eye pyramid thing on the dollar
bill, haha!

I'm totally on the fence about the colored knobs issue, please write
back quickly as Rex is mailing the quote today!!! also I like the pink
switch caps, is that an option too? ;)

i finally decided to stick with the all black Serge knobs scheme.
one important factor for my decision though, was that i already had 11 serge panels with all black knobs...
but its all a matter of personal taste....
the coloured knobs scheme is also very nice.

Don't have M-modules yet but uploaded a pic of one of my panels with
colored knobs. I chose to apply the color scheme to this panel only
and not for the rest of my studio.

I was really on the fence about the knob colors too when I bought my Creature a few weeks ago – but I decided to go for the blue CV knobs, and I’m really glad I did. As Rex suggested to me, once you get a “beard” of cables covering the markings on the panel, the blue knobs jump out more readily. Plus I’ve found the differentiation helpful since (in most cases) a blue knob with nothing plugged in to its associated jack won’t do anything when turned. If the knobs were all black, I think I’d be having to peer through the jungle of cables more often to make sure I was grabbing the right knob.

Here’s a link to a picture of my Creature with blue knobs, in the SMOG pictures area:

So I’d say go for it!

Is it possible to purchase the M class modules without the power supply and the housing. It just seems a little ridiculous to sacrifice one module's width for an on/of swith and a strip of black color.

Yeah, I think it is. You'd have a gap there, then. You could probably
purchase a regular PSD to go with either the PS2a or one of the other,
larger PSUs, and mount it (or not) however you want.
I *think* the idea behind the black strip, besides cost-savings,
obviously, is supposed to be a better power distribution system with
lower noise, etc.

If you plan to use just one M-odule, then you can always get one of those awesome wood boxes that are offered.. and of course you'd need a PSU :-)

However, if you're looking at more, and want to avoid losing the 2" of panel space to optimize your density, then you may want to consider the Shop Panels (i.e. Blue CV2 is approximately equal to a Control Generator and CV Processor or Sequencer Panel is like a SEQ-A and a SQP Seq.)

.. just a thought
y.
