Etherwave Pro price hike, versus a $30 Japanese theremin

Etherwave Pro price hike, versus a $30 Japanese theremin

2008-06-16 by Lunette Records

I'm intrigued by the comment on the $3000 (!!) Etherwave Pro Ebay auction
that only 80 of these were made - is that 80 of the maple theremins? Does
anyone know approx how many of E-Pros were sold altogether, and of which
type? I'm in now way optimistic that MoogMusic will put out another premium
instrument - there biggest market opportunity would be to put out a slightly
souped up version of the Etherwave to capture the mass market.

On the other end of the scale, Japan has been going budget theremin crazy
with a new $30 theremin kit from a subscription magazine in a minature
plastic mould of the RCA theremin!

Lydia Kavina is having fun in the 1st video.

Apparently there's a Japanese magazine that carries these little instruments
as kits:

This also explains the funny little video of the cat playing there theremin
doing the rounds:

(the shocked look at the end on the other kitten's face is priceless)

Whilst it's no real instrument as such, I'm sure it'll whet the appetite of
a few more in an already theremin crazed nation,

Thanks for the tip-off. I think that synth will go nicely with my
theremin. :-)

I'll keep an eye out for it come July 30th.

Oops.

I meant to add that I got it from Hobby Link Japan.

Probably the right place to find the analog synth when it comes out.

Susi, the limited edition with the maple (or was it Walnut??) was a
run of sixty (or eighty -- can't remember) theremins.

Except for the limited edition models, I believe the rest had the
black painted case. The models shipped to the UK were shipped without
the Moog logo (due to trademark issues with a non-related UK-based
Moog company).

My understanding is that around 1100 Epros were sold -- however I just
saw it mentioned on a website and so I wouldn't regard it as a
dependable number.

Though, Moog Music has tended to court high-end users. I have heard
that the curved front panel of the Epro was a headache -- very hard to
manufacture within tolerances. My guess is that Moog's next high-end
theremin will have a streamlined case that is easier to manufacture.

I bought one, too -- and added a 1/4" jack to it.

(you have to scroll down to get to the red theremin)

When I did the science club lecture/demo last November, I brought
along the toy theremin, my Theremax, and the Epro. (Since that time
I've added a Standard.)

As the kids were queued up to try the Epro, they enjoyed playing with
the other ones.

The sound of the kids trying all these theremins at once seemed a
perfect backdrop for a science store!
