Hurricane worries

Hurricane worries

Gang

It looks to be about a 50% percent chance we'll have to evacuate our
home to escape Hanna's wrath. My wife and kids come first and we would
need to leave if things get really dicey here. If Hanna is more than a
Cat 1 we're hitting the road.

However, we would be traveling very light, taking just our cars, two
fussin' younguns, two fussier Italian greyhounds (the other two
younguns), food, pictures, papers, and a cdrom with photos of the
house, etc.

What to do about Gabriella? The best I can come up with is to put her
in an interior closet and cover with plastic. How do I justify to an
insurance company what she's worth? One of you ventured that the
theremin was probably worth at least 5K.

This raises a very good question about insurance.
Last time I tried to insure my studio, I could not get all the gear covered
at an affordable price.

How would you even proceed to estimate and get coverage for anything very
valuable you built yourself?
Be it an instrument or an art work?
Since I'm not officially a full time artist, I can just get coverage for
other people's work,
and if I'm lucky only the cost of our own creations.

Good luck Philip!
I hope it passes by and leaves your home untouched.

best and dry wishes - John

There are a couple of other options that come to mind.

Assuming you feel your home is that vulnerable, you might consider a
small, climate-controlled storage unit. Even if you have to pay for a
whole month, you can store your most valuable possesions temoparily for
a fraction of the price of insurance or replacement. That's assuming
the construction of the storage units is superior to your dwelling.

Another option, if you have the time, is to build a very strong crate
to house your theremin, in addition to the interior closet. You could
not only wrap the theremin very tightly in plastic, the crate could be
painted on the outside with a water-proof epoxy to thwart the moisture
even further. If you're smart, you can build the crate so it can be
broken down for storage when not in use.

If you are going to seal your theremin in plastic, I would suggest
getting one of those silica gel desiccant packets to put inside before
you seal it up.

Though it may cost a bit, you might want to have it shipped somewhere
-- to a friend or relative that lives out of the hurricane's path.

After the storm passes, you could have it shipped back to you or you
could pick it up yourself.

Hope that this storm passes without serious problems for anyone.
