You have to format the HD connected to the AKAI S-1000 w/ S-1000 formatting procedure.
PC is useless if you don´t have any program/app existing for PC and S-1000.
The PC and OS doesn´t know what AKAI data ( program/sample) format is.
P.ex.,-AKAI MESA (MAC) application was/is only for Akai S-2000 and up ...
Adaptec 2904 works, Adaptec 2940 might not work at all because it´s a SCSI Ultra Wide controller and AKAI S-1000 is SCSI I / II.
The right cable for Adaptec 2904 and S-1000 is [SCSI mini 50 > Centronics 50].
For the harddrive, you have to make sure the SCSI ID, parity and termination and such is jumpered correctly.
It all depends of the brand / model of your harddrive and the only way is,- google for the jumper settings.
If the harddrive is the last drive in the chain, it must be terminated,- not the Plextor.
Look if the Plextor is terminated internally eventually which might cause all isn´t working in a chain.
If you have a old version of Steinberg Wavelab which supports SCSI ( Wavelab not higher than v 4.01b) and have a working SCSI card in the PC,- you´re able to transmit/receive samples to/from S-1000 connected to the PC SCSI card and/of from SCSI drives connected to the card.
Only the samples can be edtited and send back to the sampler or the drive.
There are also apps from Chickensys dealing w/ Akai S-1000 IIRR.
Sorting out SCSI issues works best w/ a old Apple PPC and the application SCSI Director.
It can be anything making your HD not working,- SCSI wirering in the harddrive´s enclosure, adapters, ext. cables, jumpers missing or wrong settings, termination active/passive and so on.
The drive has to be SCSI I internally connected w/ 50-PIN SCSI ribbon cable,- look if this is the case.
To identify SCSI connectors, cables and pinouts for serveral SCSI types,- google SCSI (small computer system interface)
Trial ´n error is a endless task,- SCSI is not easy and you need to have knowledge about SCSI or better go to someone who has.

Is not formatted to 512 mg and stops, but remains "caught"?
What AKAI format program I can give, if that program exists? Or should I format it in DOS?
The PC detects the sampler and displayed on-device manager as <| SCSI Optical Device> but only when I select the SCSI ID of the sampler CD-ROM, if I select the hard disk ID and refresh the Adm. Device disappears. Regardless, both the disk as the CDROM and the controller are fixed in place Adm. XP devices.
