Any easy way of chopping samples to S1100?

Any easy way of chopping samples to S1100?

2014-09-04 by belzrebuth.s@...

My workflow is really slow.I make copies of the original loop as many as the number of chops i imagine i want to use and then trim each one individually often mistaking the end time of the previous one so i'm also messing the start time of the next etc.

I know a very intuitive way of chopping might be non existent in S1100 but i would be greatly interested to hear other peoples' workflows/workarounds to the standard (?) method.
Also, is it possible to transfer recycle loops readily chopped via midi?I imagine the .rex file won't be recognised directly? Is there any other way of doing this?Another program or so..I also have Awave Studio and Extreme Sample Converter but never got my hands very dirty with these anyway..

I'll be getting a scsi pci card soon but for the time i'm stuck with midi transfer and floppies..

Hi there,

I use an old win XP machine with Adaptec scsi card (really cheap on ebay) and Recycle 1.7. Although you can't send the loops to the PC from a S1100 ( you can from a S3000XL), the S1100 is capable of receiving them + the program information and key mappings for the chopped samples. The only drawback in recycle 1.7 is that stereo samples are converted to mono.
I use wave lab 4.0 to send stereo samples and loop markers to the S1100. Works a treat. But I think thats as good as your gonna get with the S1100.

Chicken systems Millennium is brilliant for reading akai disks and exporting them to Pc folders. From there you can load to the S1100 via wave lab and/or Recycle!
Millenium will only see S3k samplers though, so no hope of remotely programming earlier S1100/S1000 sampler unfortunately.

Ive started using Recycle to create a program on the S1100 by dumping the mono sample to it, then fire in the stereo samples via Wavelab and edit the SMP2 page and the panning settings - its a quicker way of creating a program, I find..

Hope that helps

Rich

Thank for your reply !
Since I posted this I've spent a great amount of time in front of my S1100 so now I'm very comfortable editing stuff from its panel.
I use SCSI only for saving stuff (zip drive) and the whole thing of chaining devices etc just discouraged me from trying an alternative way so I learnt the 'hard' way instead!
For extremely fine chops I sometimes use the akai to record samples I already chopped on the PC.
I believe this is far easier to do than messing with SCSI or MIDI transfers.
Plus, getting samples digitally from a computer to the sampler kind of defeats the purpose (and charm) of the sampler itself nowadays, the main reason these machines are still relevant today is their character.
I personally find the idea of bypassing the A/D stage of an oldschool 16bit sampler and just use it as a sample playback machine not really good or even convenient with the tools we have available today(DAW).
Most of the time if not recorded directly in the Akai, samples will sound virtually the same as if they're triggered from a software sampler!
I do not mean to criticize your workflow in any way each one is different!
I hope that your post will help someone.
Thanks again!
Have fun.

No Problem. I'm glad you got your workaround.

I Totally agree with what you are saying regarding using the mic pre's and A/D converters of the S1100 to get that wonderful s1100 sound. I usually sample things in that way myself, its only then that I save to scsi HD, and then to PC from there via Millennium ( I have my library on the PC ).
When I return to the track at a later date, I'll just reload them back in to the S1000 via Millennium/Wavelab/Recycle, as discussed - Same quality.
I was just suggesting a way to answer your original question, which was about the use of Recycle and chopping up on the 'puter.
Don't worry I didn't take it as a criticism. I totally agree with there not being much difference in triggering samples from a DAW or hardware sampler if the source material is essentially from the same recording, as thats just sample playback and not really 'sampling' as the term suggests.

Cheers.

Rich

It seems that your method use the PC as a sample library !Never thought of that tbh.
I may try it myself at some point!
Just hope these beasts to live long enough, they're much more interesting than DAWs for sampling duties.
Cheers back!

Built like tanks - you just don't get that quality nowadays.

I would really recommend using an Old PC with Scsi cards in and use as a sample library. I have a S1100, a S3000xl and CD3000xl all hooked up via Adaptec Scsi cards, all of which share the same Sample resource on the pc.
The only thing to look out for in using the S1100 this way is that you need a SCSI HD drive in the chain too, as you need to save the samples to that first and then you can import them to the PC via Millennium.
Using a scsi HD as a staging post for your S1100 samples is the only way I could get them into the pc.

Oh yes, another thing I found out the hard way is that the S1100 can save to a S1100 formatted Scsi HD of 20gb, but if you load them back into the S1100 the samples are corrupted. Ironically, you can then load them from the Scsi HD into the S3000xl and they playback fine, and I can save them to pc HD via Millennium and they load back on the S1100 fine from the pc! - I guess its to do with the S1000/s1100 not liking drives bigger than 1024mb.

The 3kXL series is fantastic for sending a receiving via pc, but to my ears they sound a little cardboardy ( I know what I mean :) , sort of flat and lifeless in comparison to the S1100. They are dirt cheap though.
The Cd3000xl cost me £36 including the 4 cdroms that came with it. I only bought it so that i could load Akai cdroms into my S1100via scsi, and it was cheaper than trying to source and buy a stand alone scsi cdrom drive!
Crazy!

I know what you mean man..
Right now I've got a S1100,S900,S2800 and the S3kxl.
I absolutely love the S900's gritty sound and simple interface but the 1100 is just as special sound wise and it has huge ram compared to the 900 so it gets the most use.
I agree, the 3kxl does not sound as good as the 2800 or the older akais. It's still pretty though!!
I am not really sure why I got it in the f irst place now that I think about it.
It was about 60-70€ w/ full ram and a still fairly bright screen so I thought why not..
If I see things like that tossed around at these prices I just feel like rescuing them or something.
Great tips about the Scsi stuff you got there.:)
Saving for future reference!

S1000 and S1100 HDD size limit is 500MB !!!

S1100 is the only AKAI sampler coming w/ dedicated Burr-Brown converters for each single output incl. the main out,- all the other AKAI samplers multiplex.

IMO, S1100 is the best sounding AKAI sampler.

i have a cheap workflow using linux with my S1000hd.

i have a usb zip drive attatched to my computer and a scsi zip on the S1000.

i use linux akaitools to write samples to the zip drive

i chop on the computer with Shuriken beatslicer for linux.

the only things missing are that i have to manualy create programs on the akai and that akaitools only writes s3000 samples.

this is no problem though because the last S1000 os reads S3000 samples.

getting it all to work wasn't exactly easy, but i don't need to use an old windows laptop.

akaitools would work directly via scsi but usb scsi cards are really expensive.

anyway i don't hear many people using linux with akai samplers out there so i thought i'd remind everybody that the tools mostly exist.
if there were more of us then we could probably get the shuriken author to add S1k/S3k program/program export.

I used to sequence my S1100 and S2800 running Renoise on a linux machine.
Renoise is a great alternative to "big" DAWs and a very powerful tool
for both sampling and sequencing external gear.
I believe that for the price is a no-brainer ,especially for Linux users
that don't have that much options compared to Windows and Mac users.

i have an akai mpc so i don't normaly use a software sequencer.
by the way, Shuriken supports the akai mpc500, mpc1000 and mpc2500, and can export programs directly to CF card.

renoise is cool, i had a look at it but i'm not really into trackers.

you can run a suprising amount of windows midi software on linux using wine. i have a few synth editors that run perfectly,

prodatum for emu proteus2000,
bassstationedit for novation bass station.
m-audio enigma midi mapping for trigger finger and other controllers.
korg nano editor,
miraged for the ensoniq mirage sampler.

as long as its not a realtime program like a sequencer it should be fine.

i like the seq24 sequencer, its halfway between ableton live and an alesis mmt8, its a bit better than the mpc for programing 303 type sequences.

Forget midi sample dumps it takes forever and a day.

I use recycle 1.7 (the last to support SCSI). You select the S3000XL and upload via SCSI, only works in windows xp as there are no ASPI drivers for adaptec SCSI cards in win7. Very quick chop and upload even after booting out of 7 and into xp for the upload, much quicker than chopping by hand.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
