adding an internal drive to a S1100 / S1000 ?

2004-07-18 by formals777

Hi,

Some weeks ago Bounce was upgrading his S1100HD and he has send me a
picture of his S1100HD (see photo's section on the site). From the
picture you can see that it is not that difficult to put a HD inside a
1100 / 1000. Who tried this already? There is a power connector on the
motherboard so I think all we need is a hard drive, a custom power
cable and a L-shaped metal plate (to be screwed on the display frame).

Regards,

Frank

Hello.

First things first; I'd like to introduce my self as I'm a newbie to this list. My name is Jahn [NadaSvada], and I am from Norway.

I just just got my second hardware sampler (S1100) wich I plan on using as drum machine. The sampler has onboard SCSI, and I'd like to install a 1GB SCSI disk that I have laying around. Could you please tell me what I would need to get this up and running? Is there a cable attached innside so that I can connect as is, or do I need to buy one separatly. If so, what kind of cable do I need?

I have a Yamaha A5000 wich is connected to an external SCSI disk and a ZIP-drive. Could I include the S1100 in the same SCSI cahin so that I am able to use the ZIP-drive for transferring samples?

Thanks in advance, and I'm sorry if I am asking to many questions at once. Please let me know if you'd like it any other way :)

best. Jahn-O. [NadaSvada] -Norway

Jahn-Otto,

I didn't try it yet, but there is a connector on the motherboard which
can be used for the power supply of the hard drive. You will need to
make that cable yourself but it can't be hard to make. Next you'll
need a scsi flatcable and an L-shaped metal plate. This can be screwed
next to the plate holding the floppy drive.
This is what I could see on the pictures I got from the inside of the
akai S1100 HD. Do this only if you have a basic knowledge of
electronics. There is a risk of damaging the power supply of your
S1100 if the power supply cable is not made properly. First check the
voltages. The name of the connector on the motherboard is P125.
Let me know if this works. If I can find a small scsi drive I will try
to do the same.

Regards,

Frank

I have the S1000, well I share it with a friend and it's really hers
but anyway :-) It has a card inside which has space for a scsi
connector but does not have the header soldered on. I would like to
put an internal zip drive in the place of the floppy but it needs to
have a header soldered onto the scsi card. I can do that. I am
guessing that the S1100 is the same way. Also... I believe that the
s1000/1100 will only recognize 512megs of a hard disk.

Kiira,

Good idea to replace the floppy drive. However, how do you load newer
OS versions while booting up? I think this only works through the
floppy drive. I tried it, and the akai doesnt look on the attached
scsi MO disk when booting.

Frank

I hadn't thought about that but mine is not a problem since it has 4.
40 roms in it.

Kiira,

How did you get these roms?

Hello all :)

Do anybody know what's the latest OS for the S1100HD? I have ver 2.xx -something (the direct to disc rom/os).
If this is an old version, do you think I should truy to get an upgrade?
What would I gain from this?

Jahn-Otto,

If you look at http://www.akaipro.com/int/download/archive_os.html
you see the latest available OS'es. However, I didn't know akai
released a S1100HD ? Is it written on the front or did someone add a
HD ? Anyway, I dont see why there should be a OS difference between
1100 and S1100HD.

Re: [akaiS1000S1100Samplers] Re: adding an internal drive to a S1100 / S1000 ?

2004-07-31 by Jahn-Otto Indsto

Frank,

What I mean by S1100HD is that it has the direct-to-disc recording option (rom/software?). I think I meant to ask if this version has the same OS as the standard S1100? If not, what would be the latest?

On another subject: I was first thinking of installing a 1gb disk in the S1100, but I discarded the project after some research (to much of a hassle). So now I'm thinking of an alternative. Since I allready have a Yamaha A5000 wich has it's own SCSI chain with an external HD and Zip-drive, I was hoping I would be able to connect the Zip-drive to the S1100 in adition to the A5K. And when I had to use the Zip with the S1100, I would just un-mount it from the A5K (and vica-verca).

Any thoughts on this would be most appreciated :)

best. Jahn-O.

Re: adding an internal drive to a S1100 / S1000 ?

2004-07-31 by formals777

Jahn-Otto,

- All S1100 have HD recording, it is possible that HD recording was
not supported in early versions.
- Normally there is no problem to mount an internal HD in the S1100.
It's just my Mutec which seems to have a problem with the internal
SCSI port. Its already the second scsi card which has problems. Time
to buy a new one? (more than 100$)
The most difficult part of mounting a HD internally is to make an
L-shaped support, or some other solution. You could even screw it on
the top lid of the case.
- Your solution with using a drive for both A500 and S1100 is risky if
you want to use these samplers at the same time. Hotplugging a scsi
cable causes your scsi card to blow up! Thats perhaps one of the
reasons why there are so many s1000's with a bad scsi card.

Rgds,

Frank

[akaiS1000S1100Samplers] Re: adding an internal drive to a S1100 / S1000 ?

2004-07-31 by Jahn-Otto Indsto

Frank,

Seems like you have misunderstood what I meant by mounting the Zip-drive. I didn't mean actually plugging/unplugging the cable. A SCSI device must be mounted (software setting) in order to be seen by the sampler. I have not checked this on the S1100 yet, but it works this way with the A5K. So, the sampler doesn't know that the device is there as long as the disk is unmounted (still physically connected) by the sampler. The samplers/hd/zip will be hooked up to the same SCSI chain, but the samplers will access it one at a time. By doing it this way, It will be easier to transfer samples between the samplers and the computers (the computers is not in the SCSI chain, but one of them have a Zip-drive witch is networked to the others).
One thing might be a problem though. I'm not shure on how they will react with two brains (the samplers) in the chain...
There should not be any fatal consequences... at least I hope ther won't be any... :)

Re: adding an internal drive to a S1100 / S1000 ?

Jahn-Otto,

I see what you want to do.
I don't see why it should harm your sampler to do it this way.
Originally, SCSI and its protocol was created for only one host in the
chain. But, if the communicating programs are adapted, it is possible
to do any data communication over scsi. There exists a program to
communicate between your A5000 and a pc so that you can load and edit
samples over SCSI. But in that case the program is adapted to that
unusual situation. In your case success will depend on how both
samplers behave. Let us know the results of your experiment.

Rgds,

Frank

Zip-drive. I didn't mean actually plugging/unplugging the cable. A
SCSI device must be mounted (software setting) in order to be seen by
the sampler. I have not checked this on the S1100 yet, but it works
this way with the A5K. So, the sampler doesn't know that the device is
there as long as the disk is unmounted (still physically connected) by
the sampler. The samplers/hd/zip will be hooked up to the same SCSI
chain, but the samplers will access it one at a time. By doing it this
way, It will be easier to transfer samples between the samplers and
the computers (the computers is not in the SCSI chain, but one of them
have a Zip-drive witch is networked to the others).
