Racking the S1000

Racking the S1000

2006-12-11 by gmanca101

I have this S1000 that I haven't been able to use because I don't have
a suitable space for it; well now that I am planning on building a
desk for my synth, I have an idea to place the sampler behind the
synth. Howerver, in order for it to fit, I'd have to hang the S1000
with the front facing the ceiling.

Is there any issue with this as far as functionality?

Since I started using Reason I rarely use my S1000 I will sell it for $225 including shipping. Anyone interested hit me at benfclark@...

function-wise its fine, though heat rises so the front might get hotter than intended. at least mounting it horizontally lets the heat rise in to the case. dust is evil too!!

years ago i got my brother to make me a 3x4u rack to sit over my master keyboard so i didn't take up too much space in my room

<http://alaskahighway.com/studio/pd6.mov>

you will probably need apple's quicktime to see this. rotate left & right to see the rest of the setup. the pd6 workstation worked very well as it didnt take up much space front-to-back and allowed me to add stuff to the top surface.

the lastest studio, 5000 miles away from pd6, looks like this

<http://www.alaskahighway.com/studio/>

the alternative is to buy an ultimate support amp stand <http://www.ultimatesupport.com/s.nl/it.A/id.743/.f?sc=14&category=40> and have the s1000 sat on the floor but pointing up at you by turning the stand around and having the long pole pointing at you. i use this stand for an alesis dm pro in a 2u flightcse live - when i'm playing my electronic drum kit the flight case is angled up at me so i can see it. neat solution.

Hi !

Take care of heat ! Depending on which memory-boards you are using, it can
lead to distorted samples !
I had this w/ an S-1000 mounted in a rack the regular way, but without some
rackspace leftover above the S-1000 ...

Thanks for all the replys.

Yeah, I was worried about the memory because the back is full with 3 8
meg cards, a digital board, and the scsi board; I guess I'll install a
fan with a filter blowing air in a motion of from the floor up to the
ceiling. I'll probably have to make some cuts into the case to get
some ventilation, but I won't touch the front. But I'm glad to hear
that you have the same setup Frank so that's encourging.

Thanks again!

Hello, PeWe and S1000/S1100 members
Well, maybe it is reason of my troubles with s1100?
I bought it via Ebay, with overseas shipping. Item is just canme, tt is powers up, load disks, but all sounds i can get from it (doesn't matter, from floppys or sampled sounds) sound with digital distortion. How it can be resolved?

Kind Regards,
Boris

Double check if there are memory cards inside not being original AKAI.
Pull ´em and test with a AKAI card ( 2MB or 8MB ).
I assume, you will at least have 1 orig. AKAI card in the S-1100,- the one it was shipped with originally and which is a 2MB card.
If it works w/ this card w/o distortion, a sampler fault is sorted out.

Pull the Akai card and insert 3rd party cards one by one to test ´em separately by loading exactly the same samples you loaded w/ the orig. AKAI card.
Wait an hr. and play,- if there´s distortion, the card causes the prob.
It doesn´t mean the card is faulty,- there simply were some 3rd party cards produced being more sensitive on heat than the original cards.

Solutions:
Ditch a 3rd party card causing the issue by heat and replace it by original card.

Mod the case w/ a fan after being sure the issue is caused by heat.
You´ll find that out by testing a card introducing issues in a rackmount config. by testing the same card w/ the sampler outside of a rack.
If the card doesn´t introduce issues w/ the sampler outside of a ack but lid closed, it might be worth keeping the card and looking for better ventilation.

But it can also be, a memoy card is defective or your sampler has another issue.

You need to make the DAC calibration!

Thank You for fast answer, PeWe!
Just made that operations with cards. one of them marked as Akai S1000 card, second one just have a number L5069C5010
Heres pics of them:

http://img651.imageshack.us/i/img1875w.jpg/

I put them in queue, and put each one in different slots, but it produced that distorted noise anyway. here's examples of that noise, compared to my s950

Does it mean that trouble is not in sampler's memory?

hi Peter!
Can you tell a bit more about that talibration? All outputs are with same noise btw...
Thank You

diagnostic is difficult via email.

If the sampler distorts w/ both cards inserted alternately, there might be a sampler issue.

Did you jumper your S-1100 mainboard right for usage of 2MB and/or 8MB cards ?

You cannot plug in any card into any slot, they have to be inserted in a specific order even the jumpers are set correctly.
You´re lucky to have dip-switches in the S-1100 while in a S-1000 you´d have to solder bridges to get the mainboard jumpered correctly.
In any case, a 2MB card has to be the 1st one inserted in slot #1 and the/a 8MB cards in the next slot #2.

If you have 2 8MB cards,- both go the slot #1 and #2

There are more combinations to pay attention for,- here´s the list for jumper settings on the mainboard as well as right order of cards:
