Proto pictures

2004-12-20 by colinfraser_com

Folks,

I've uploaded some photos of the sample production case here:
http://www.p3sequencer.com/proto-case.htm

Once a few of my daft but easily fixed mistakes are sorted, I'm all
set to go ahead with the bulk order of finished cases.
Let's hope they're as quick with the larger run as they were with
the sample - I wasn't expecting it for another week at least.

Cheers,
Colin f

That looks really very good indeed. I know it was mentioned ages ago, but i particularly like the recessed sockets, so the
rackmount option dosnt take up extra U.

All in all very fancy.

wow!!! i have had my P3 for awhile now (boards & chip) and been waiting on the pre-built
cases to construct mine.....looks like its gonna work out REAL nice....great job colin, you
have done a great job with this whole project .....can't wait to get my hands on it :-)

I've made the new case take the older boards as simply as possible.
There'll be a slight modification required to the keypad board - the
mounting holes will need to be elongated by 2mm each with a file or drill.
This is due to the minimum distance the press-fit standoffs have to be from
an edge.
Other than that, it'll all drop straight in, and wont need any of the
jiggling about that was usually required with a home-made case.
If there's demand for it, I might also do some 6 DIN I/O boards that are
compatible with the previous mainboards.
If you're interested in a case only, and haven't already mailed me about it,
now's the time to let me know - the numbers available for this will be
limited from the first run of cases.

Its a bit of a pity about the pcb standoffs showing through the aluminium.

My slowly growing EFM (ele4music.com) system is in aluminium to match my first modular, the doepfer a100...

A brushed aluminium p3 would look pretty nice on top of the doepfer mcv24 midi cv unit too...

But, yeah, im just ranting. I doubt if i can convince myself of another p3... Yet...

I understand you can flatten down the raised bits and brush the panel to get
rid of them, but I wasn't considering a brushed finished anyway, as it is
more expensive and not as durable.
The choice to make is between anodised or painted. The anodising has to be
done before the standoffs are fitted, and though it does make the surface
harder, but there's no guarantee that there wouldn't be a slight visibility
of the pressings.
So I think a painted finish is the best option. Unless I change my mind ;-)
I'll need to discuss it with the factory.

I think im talking nonsense anyway... the a100 isnt brushed, but anodised, as are the blanks im using for the EFM. But, i do think
that the mcv24 is brushed.

Like i said though... just muttering. I have absolute confidence that the finished article will look superb whichever way its done.
And yes, i think that painted could look even better, even if it dosnt match ^my^ system ; )

Looking good Colin!

Maybe I should put of my P3s (old boards) into one of these.
What's the price for a case-only upgrade?
And what does the 6-DIN board do for my old pcboards?

Estimated price at the moment is £120. I don't have the pricing on the
wooden cheeks yet, so it may be a little more.

> And what does the 6-DIN board do for my old pcboards?

The new mainboard has a PIC on it that does DIN sync to MIDI clock
conversion.
This allows the sync output to be configured for DIN sync or clock only midi
out.
The new 6 DIN I/O board is incompatible with the previous mainboard.

A 6 DIN board for the previous mainboard would have the PIC on the I/O board
itself.
It would give you an optional clock only midi out instead of DIN sync, plus
4 parallel midi outs instead of just one - just the same I/O options as the
new revision boards. To support this, a single jumper wire needs to be added
to the older mainboard.

Synchronizing pattern changes in playlists

2004-12-23 by Gene Schwartz

I expect that soon after I pose this question, Paul Nagle will post the
obvious answer to it, making me feel silly. So much the better.

Suppose I have a pattern that practically of indeterminate length - lots of
probabilities afoot, affecting the pattern length and direction - things
scoots around for awhile before finally reaching step 16, where it is set
again to a length of 1.

How would I, if I can - tell the P3 that when I reach the end of this
pattern (by playing the final step in the pattern length as set in the
pattern) to increment the playlist on another track - in other words, say
that NOW I want to switch to the second pattern on my playlist on this other
track.

Does that question make any sense?

Thanks,
Gene

It does. Have you been peeking at my list of requests for "conditional
events"?
One way that occurs to me would be to put a Part select aux event on
that last step and set up the part selected to have the alternate
playlist you require. Then, whenever this is reached, it will
(depending on the current gbar count) make the selection
automatically. It's not a perfect solution - because there's no
specific event to do remote control of playlist sequencing. Colin may
think of a better way, of course. He's like that.

Yeah - that makes sense. I was thinking that I'd have to automated part
changes to achieve this but was hoping that there was a simpler way. But,
then again, it's not like this way is particularly hard...

Btw, I noticed that there was a newer version of the User's Guide up, and
downloaded it. But it seems to be missing most of the 'tips and tricks' (or
whatever it was called) pages. They were in the table of contents, but not
in the actual content. At least in the one I downloaded...

Ah, sorry, must've cocked up. I have a slightly updated version I was
going to upload but thought I might polish it over the hols. Will take
a look and fix over the next few days.
