NRPM?

NRPM?

2005-10-15 by richardscott

Hi Colin

"There's not yet a simple implementation of them"

So you are giving me some hope! :)

the NRPM specs for the Andro are here:

http://www.alesis.com/downloads/software/A6/A6SYX.pdf

towards the end of that document are listed over a thousand
NRPM controller numbers! However I think that I would
realistically only ever need immediate access to 20 of them
for modulation purposes so a user option of a configurable
NRPM map of 20 numbers in addition to 100 CC#s would be
ample - and ultra flexible: certainly it would be easier to
scroll through 20 NRPM numbers on the P3 to hear what effect
they have than to have to map a CC on the Andro everytime I
want to try something out. So yes if its possible I'd
request it - I think it could be useful for access virus
users as well?

Would be awsome to be able to control the Andro NRPN's!!
Specially since the build in arp/stepsequencer does not send out midi
notes (how could they ever forgot about THAT!)

So, you've got my vote here too Colin!

:-)

The Virus doesn't use NRPNs. It uses MIDI CCs - and for a few rarely
used parameters it uses poly aftertouch. These are far easier to tweak
in programs such as Cubase than NRPNs. Alesis thought it was a good idea
so perhaps they have a step sequencer lined up that copes with them?

I stand corrected on the NRPNs - I thought one of the major VAs was using them

as for, "Alesis thought it was a good idea so perhaps they have a step sequencer lined up that copes with them?"

that will never happen, I think Alesis just miscalculated that NRPN would take off and then it didn't. FYI the NRPNs work very easily and smoothly with an Akai MPC4000 sequencer - and you can smoothly modulate just about anything imaginable with em, so I think there is a technical and creative advantage. There's a few programmable CC#s on the A6 as well if necessary but NRPN on the P3 would be an a nice option even if only for us few A6 users

Only Alesis AFAIK

The Virus uses adaptive smoothing which works great - as smooth as I
need anyway. The higher resolution may make sense for MIDI recorder-type
sequencers but not for step sequencing applications - again all my
opinion. I think I waffled on a bit on the topic in my Alesis Ion
review... :)
