P3 Memory Expansion

2007-07-17 by sequentix

Folks,

The price for the memory expansion boards will be 49ukp including
VAT, plus shipping.
In the US that's approximately $86 plus shipping.
VAT is not payable outside the EU.

Given the NRE costs, there will be a single run of these boards and
that will be it.
I have ordered enough to cover the requests I received plus about
half
as many again, so if you haven't put your name down yet...

The boards should be ready in a couple more weeks. They are being
assembled elsewhere, which is a new and scary experience !

Best regards,

I was going to do the video once I have a production board, but I guess I
can do one with the prototype if it helps you decide one way or the other.
Give me a couple of days to get it sorted.

The memory board installation requires the P3 to be opened up (obviously),
so you could always check out the 'opening a P3 video' here:
http://www.sequentix.com/files/P3-front-panel-removal.wmv
for a start.

Once the panel is off, there are 5 screws holding the main board in.
With the mainboard removed, one RAM chip is levered out with a flat
screwdriver, then the memory expansion board is inserted in its place.

The current build of v4 detects the presence of the memory expansion
automatically.

So no soldering required even?

I suppose I better pull my finger out and put my name down before they're all gone.
Keep one for me please Colin.
Cheers

There should be no soldering required.

There is a small possibility that on some units, a capacitor on the
mainboard will need to be bent over to clear the memory board.
The reset capacitor next to the CPU is a 10uF part. I routinely used low
profile parts there, though in cases where I ran out of the smaller ones, a
larger type may have been used.
If it can't be bent over, it would need to be desoldered or cut out - it's
not actually needed as the CPU has a built-in reset timer.

Thanks in advance,
