Before i bother Bob with cockpit trouble!...

2010-09-22 by daniel_axon

Hello everyone,

I've just started my modular project with a minisytem and am having a few problems - i think their may be a fault with this old system i bought second-hand. Initially the EG depth pot was very noisy and tempramental but the system overall worked. Now i can only get the very tiniest signal from it, even when just testing by sending an osc straight to the VCA and turning up the signal and initial level - its really really quiet - if i played another synth with my monitors that loud i would loose roof tiles! Seems like somethings broken in the VCA now as well as a bad EG depth pot - any thoughts before i send i bother Bob with this and send it off for repair?

Cockpit trouble is always a possibility of course, but i think the basic test shows somethings up?

thanks, Dan

If all your modules are giving you trouble it sounds like it could be PSU
related. However, first of all, I suggest you unplug all the modules except
one, for example the VCA, and try that.

It is conceivable that a dodgy connection in one module may be causing
problems with others.

Make sure the module is plugged in correctly with no pins bent, and the
connector the right way up.
If this works, then add each module and test one by one (making sure you
power down before plugging each one in) and then you might isolate which
module is troublesome.

If you still get problems with the first module then it would seem that the
PSU is faulty. If so, then you probably need to send it back to Bob. A
friend's system had a PSU issue caused by a faulty bridge rectifier, but I
wouldn't mess about with the PSU unless you're VERY confident with
electronics.

Good luck

Sean

Hi Sean,

Thanks for the advice, much appreciated - so take everything out then start with
just an osc and the VCA and do the initial level test?

Can you also tell me are the new RS95 oscs much better than the old 90's? i've
seen some 90's second hand but wonder if i should stump up the extra for the
newer 95's?

I get a sweaty forehead when working with anything over 12V so will stay clear
of the PSU!!!

thanks again, Dan

95e but aside from that there's not much (any?) material difference - except
with the "e" you have a multi-turn pot which is great sometimes and
frustrating at other times. Oh, and not wishing to resurrect old debates,
but the sine wave on the RS-95 isn't the purest thing so if it's pristine FM
or ring modulation you're after then you're probably better off using an
oscillating filter for your sine wave.

Personally, I find it useful to have the sine wave anyway, but I use the saw
and pulse out much more often and the characteristic sound of the AS
oscillators is the shape modulation so having a mix of RS-90 and RS-95 is a
good thing.

The sine output is great because in addition to giving you (something close
to) a sine wave, you can also shape it in two ways. With the tri/saw morph
pot you can morph the sine into a curvy-saw which sounds good, and different
from the linear saw. Also with the sine shape CV in, you can change the
tone even more, adding some pleasant overtones to the sine, and get even
more complex waveforms by changing both parameters at the same time.

I also found the 95e to exhibit a bit more stability and keyboard tracking
accuracy. I really like the multiturn dial since it makes it very easy to
find the exact pitch you want. It also gives you a lot more control when
setting up FM sounds. And it looks fantastic.

Hi there,

Not sure if this is the place to ask, but i just wondered if anyone had any
modules they were selling? I'm looking for an ADSR, osc and maybe a few other
bits - interested to hear what you've got if you're shifting anything....

Have now doubled my mini-system to 6U and loving it!

thanks, Dan

I have the following which could go to a new home:

RS165 Signal Mixer
RS280 Divider
RS270 Adapter
