trying to understand mackie emulation, the bcr and ableton live.

2008-09-16 by nuffsaid77777

Hi all,

First of all thanks for letting me in, the great files and certainly
the great bcmanager, finally a stable solution to edit me bcr2000. super!

I've been dj-ing for more then thirteen years, Vinyl only. Time has
come though to make the transition to a digital medium, ableton it is.

That's why I bought some time a go a bcr2000, nice piece of equipment.
especially after the introduction of mackie emulation.

I've looked through the files provided here in this group and I was
missing the basis for mackie emulation, I found some pages on the net
describing it:
here ==> http://home.comcast.net/~robbowers11/MCMap.htm
and
here ==> http://www.phys.unsw.edu.au/jw/notes.html

My questions are:
Did I miss a chapter here in the group and is there more info dealing
about the Mackie Protocol and the ableton live midi basics?

How does the the f12 window switch work in the latest ableton live
template work?

so you allready found some pages explaining the mackie protocol and
the sent notes & CCs.
all you need now is to read the live manual, chapter->MIDI AND KEY
REMOTE CONTROL->Mackie Control  (~page 340)

now you know ALL commands the Mackie sends, AND ALL commands that live
responds to, and HOW it reacts to the diff. msg./buttons/dials

no just dl from the files/Presets section the file
'bcr2000_live_ver4_1.zip'. this includes also a great manual, and of
course a ready-to-go preset for the bcr.
now all you need to do, is putting things together (assuming that you
want to modify the existing preset).

i did another setup (built on the one above) that features 16vPots
instead of 8 for example...

i'm not sure what you mean... F12 button (on my pc keyboard) switches
between clip view or track view.
you can easily 'emulate' that function with the mackie emu...
look @ ableton live manual, p.352:

-----------------------------------------------------
5. ViewArr (On) Toggles Arrangement View and Session View. When the
Mackie Control’s Shift key is held down, this sets the program focus
to the Arrangement View or Session View, whichever is currently on screen.
6. ToggleDetail (Rec/Rdy) Toggles Clip View and Track View. When the
Mackie Control’s Shift key is held down, this sets the program focus
to the Clip View or Track View, whichever is currently on screen.
-----------------------------------------------------

just look @ mackie prtotocol to see what is sent when these buttons
are pressed, and then program your buttons to do the same

Yep that's it, the live manual...
It didn,t come to my mind to read that again, but you are absolutely
right it captures all the missing information.

I already got your bcr2000 live ver41 preset working, nice work sir..
I even managed to make my first template working. (start, stop up, down)

In my opnion there is still one essential function missing and that is
"loop on in session view" As far as i Know it can only be done with
some very unelangt scripts. anybody?

i'm currently @ work, not @ my studio,
but there is allready a 'LOOP' button in the live 4.1 preset
(that is kips work, not mine, btw)

this loop button (as i remeber) works in session view as well as in
arrangement view. its actually the same button in live

Unfortunately the Loop function only works in session view, as expected.

I Think the mackie functionality build in Live is more useful for the
arrangement view then for the session view.

Will try to master it though..

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
