How to clean the surface BCR and BCF2000?

2014-03-24 by <senang@...>

Hi,
My BCR and BCF2000 have been collecting dust and such lately and I want to clean them. I wonder what might be the best way to do so. Especially the small rings surrounding the rotaries are all sticky with dust.

Anyone have a golden tip as how to approach this?

For gear like this I like to use a canister style vacuum with a soft brush attachment on the hose. Nothing special just the one that comes with it. The brush is soft enough that it doesn’t scratch anything and the bristles can move the dust a bit so that it gets vacuumed. I even clear LCD TV’s this way. This makes more sense to me than compressed air or anything like that since you are actually getting rid of the dust rather than just temporarily moving it within the room. J

Part of why this works well is that you can actually touch the entire surface you are cleaning with the bristles so you get good seal and therefore good suction. The only downside I have found is that you have to be careful for very loose knobs or slider caps since you can vacuum them right off. The good news is that you can always get them back as long as you notice and are willing to dig through the vacuum bag (I haven’t actually had this happen yet but it’s always a possibility).

The thing is the small rings around the rotaries are kind of sticky and vacuuming doesn't help.
I think I could use a cotton bud with some kind of detergent but am a little afraid I might damage the electronics or it will rust quicker or so.

I've used a hypodermic needle filled with medical grade alcohol. Don't use any sort of contact cleaner as it may discolor or dissolve in some cases the plastic. Your best option to open up the bcr completely to do this. Some would say that alcohol is not a good idea. I've cleaned more than one piece of gear this way and none have ever been damaged or failed in any way. As for the rotary pots themselves, you can use something called deoxit. Take it to the spa!

I used a spray for cleaning LCD TV and similar stuff. You spray it on a soft cloth and then wipe the dirt. Used it once on BCR with a great success, and soon will again, since its dusted after the studio renovation.

DON'T use alcohol !! or any organic solvent until you have tried it out on a non-visible area and make sure it doesn't soften the material.
I wouldn't even risk that.
It could easily melt the plastic parts (depending on what the plastic is) or strip off the paint.

Water it a very good solvent, and, by itself, it won't conduct electricity.
With persistence it should remove the sticky stuff with frequent changes of a cotton bud..
If nothing else, it should be the first thing to try.
