Getting BCF to work in Ableton Live 9?

Getting BCF to work in Ableton Live 9?

2017-04-17 by Jonathan van Clute

Hi all, just joined so this is my first post. I’ve searched through the group and found a lot of interesting posts, but no straight forward “here is how to get a BCF working out of the box with Ableton Live 9”. That’s what I’m seeking.

I just picked up a BCF second hand and am excited at the potential applications in Live, but unfortunately out of the gate it didn’t do anything. I set it up like I would any other controller and as far as I could tell everything was correct, but it would not respond to Live and wouldn’t transmit to it either.

After a few hours of fiddling with it, it suddenly “woke up” and snapped to attention - I really don’t know why. Now it does respond to Live and transmits as well, but I have no idea what any of the buttons do since there is no chart or guide! Even the manual doesn’t say, unless you are using a 3rd party emulation mode. I was hoping/expecting that it would work with Live straight out of the box, since the Behringer product page specifically mentions Ableton alongside Cubase and Logic.

So first, does the BCF actually work natively without having to use HUI or Cubase emulation?

Second, what do all the buttons actually do in BC mode?

Additionally I’m looking at the Isotonik BCF control script as a possible answer to what I’m after, since it appears to add a whole lot of extra functionality such as the Red Ring and more. At the moment I can’t figure out how to access anything more than the first 8 tracks but when I do, that would be a very nice feature indeed.

Appreciate any insights… thanks!

Oh P.S. how do I actually log into the group so I can access the files section? My email address is not connected to Yahoo, I haven’t used a Yahoo address in probably going on 15 years. Do I get a login/password somehow?

Hi Jonathan, I would very much like to know everyone's answer to your question. What I have found is that it doesn't allow mapping to set up the knobs for what I want them to control but they all control set parameters it seems, it could be the amount of gain and points on the EQ Eight or the amount of reverb in a send track, it seems to be a matter of tweaking the knobs and then finding what is changing in ableton lol I hope someone else has a more specific approach on how to use it in a more meaningful way.

Thanks David, I suppose it’s nice to know I’m not alone in wondering what this thing is actually set up to do! Though I’m pretty bummed that there’s not been any reply. That leads me to believe there’s no simple “Oh sure here’s the PDF that spells it all out…” answer here. Which royally sucks… as right now it means I have a nifty looking paperweight occupying precious space on my desk. =(

blockquote, div.yahoo_quoted { margin-left: 0 !important; border-left:1px #715FFA solid !important; padding-left:1ex !important; background-color:white !important; } BCF2000 , It has a learning curve . But, you can set it up to run in Mackie Emulation mode & just run your mixer in Abelton I would think . I use Mixcraft 8 Pro Studio , it's a loyalty thing ! Lol ! But, I set up every channel to do something different . Where you have the "hold the first button & turn the power on & you have p-1 show up" . Well Mixcraft 8 has a thorough MIDI section that I didn't know about . So I in the end didn't use any software . Once I noticed how B Control Edit tried to work, I understood that edit was the key to the universe as well as save . I just started at P1 & hit edit & started with the first push to toggle knob & named it 1&1 & so on until all controls & faders had a midi number according to channel or preset number , then I went to P-2 & hit edit then started each Control at 2 & so on & so forth all the way through p-16 1 through 16/64 .. It's time consuming , really time consuming . But worth it because you know, physically editing it ,makes it to where you don't mix any midi presets & channel numbers up . I didn't want to do it & I put it off for a day . Because once I realized I could just swap to preset & edit to control any vst , by just changing preset . I got extremely excited & I ended up doing it all in about 5 hours . I did 12 channels each with 1 through 64 ,I think it ends up being 64 controls with faders per one preset , I think . Then I assigned each controller P-1 , P-2 main mixer That's P1/1through P-1/128 midi numbers - P-2 that's P2/1 through 2/128 .... Then P3 & P4 for different Instruments & vst controls & so on, looks like this P-3/1through3/128 P-4/1 through 4/128 .....It's real simple to do when you realize that each preset channel can have 128 different commands each & 16 presets & it's all controllable by holding down the edit button & then changing that control to CC & giving it a number under channel 1 through 16 or preset 1 through 16 , they are the same thing ... Then when you assign on your main mixer say Fader 1 = 1/1 .... Then on preset 2 you have Fader 1 = 2/1 .... Well that Fader on preset two will control something totally different than what Preset Fader 1 controls & they will not bother each other ... Other than that before I realized what was going on I just used Logic Pro Control mode in Mixcraft by clicking setting for controller in Mixcraft & selecting Logic Pro . Having the Emulation mode in Logic . That was the easiest way to use it was in Logic Emulation or Mackie for Cubase Emulation ..... But once I figured out what "Hold down the edit button , while held down , move which control you want to change" It was like a miracle happened !! Ha . I pretty much changed & assigned them while I was mixing a song . Because when you want to use a new VST that is not yet in a preset - just start in any clear preset & hit edit , select its channel & hit learn in your DAW or VSTs midi options to accept the channel & bam a new control ! Does this make any sense ... This last part I'm trying to say is it can be time consuming , but you can also set up on the fly while using whatever vst or instrument you want to control ..... But like I did , old school , sat there & edited each preset & all of it's channels by preset number & Midi number from 1 to 128 ..... Hope that helps , nothing with midi is really super simple , until you learn & understand midi & what it does & it can still trip you up after you think you have learned everything .... But all you need is that edit button held down & a lot of patience .... There are easier ways , like with Mountain utilities or BCRFEDIT ... But in the end I found the edit & Patience & then save to be the best option for me .... I'm thinking about getting a BCR as well & using my BCF as a Mackie style mixer & The BCR as a multi control unit for the instruments & VSTs .... Hope this helps guys ....

Thanks for the info Declan - though it was very hard to read a wall of text like that. Maybe some paragraph breaks in the future? =)

I appreciate what you’re saying about the inherent flexibility of customizing every last controller as you have, but I’m just not willing to go through all that hassle. Especially as I don’t understand even after reading your message, how I would access multiple banks of channels about 1-8, even after customizing.

Behringer’s website lists Ableton Live right next to Cubase and Logic, so my expectation was that it would “just work” out of the box. I don’t think that’s at all unreasonable. But since their manual doesn’t even include a single mention of Ableton - not even to use it in an emulation mode or anything - I’m stuck.

Is there nobody on this list using a BCF with Ableton Live that can explain what all the controls do in Live? I would sure appreciate the input as I’m sure others on the list would as well.

In the meantime I’m going to continue searching the corners of the web for the info, but I’m not terribly optimistic.

I think Isotonik's template and/or preditor should help you out...
Or use it in CC mode and configure Ableton's remote controller script...

Re: [bc2000] Getting BCF to work in Ableton Live 9?

2017-04-20 by Jonathan van Clute

Thanks, I actually have PrEditor already for use with my Push 2 but haven’t set it up (just got it a few weeks back but have been busy). I bought it with the LCXL script because I thought I’d be using that, but now that I have a BCF and don’t see myself using the LCXL, I’m debating picking up the BCF script too.

I’m not sure I really have my head around what each of them is, if I have PrEditor are you suggesting that I’ve already got what I need to get the BCF working? Is the BCF script just basically a template for PrEditor? Is this one of those things that would take me days or weeks to do on my own in PrEditor so while it’s technically possible, I’m better off just buying the script and saving the time?

Re: [bc2000] Getting BCF to work in Ableton Live 9?

2017-05-05 by Daniel Hesse

Hi Jonathan,If you want to use the BCF as the ONLY controller for the standard mixing tasks (faders, mutes, solo, transport functions etc.) then there is a readily available setup within Live:Go to Preferences/Link Midi/ and select BCF2000 as your control surface.
Documentation on what button/knob does what in this mode can be found in the Help View / Midi Controllers / Page 7of12 click on "Control Surface Reference", select BCF2000 from the list
It seems you want to be using Push 2 as well? Then the above will most likely not work together with Push. I have an BCR2000 which would produce random funny stuff if I connect it via USB and run it in parallel to Push 2. Solution: Try connecting your BCF via MIDI (NOT USB!) through a separate interface (that way you avoid that Live is too "clever" and recognizes your BCF) and do a manual mapping (along the lines of the earlier posts of the other guys). Hope this helps.
Best regards,
Daniel

I'm thinking about getting a BCR as well & using my BCF as a Mackie style mixer & The BCR as a multi control unit for the instruments & VSTs .... Hope this helps guys ....

Re: [bc2000] Getting BCF to work in Ableton Live 9?

2017-05-05 by Jonathan van Clute

Aha!! Thank you so much Daniel, I had NO IDEA that information was available from within Live, and never would have found it without your tip.

Unfortunately they leave out any reference to most of the buttons on the right, displaying one group of 4 buttons but without indicating *which* group on the actual BCF, they are referring to. Plus with 4 buttons accounted for, it leaves 10 buttons totally unaccounted for, and I still don’t know what they are supposed to do.

And you’re right that I would like to be able to use it alongside the Push. I don’t even have a dedicated MIDI interface anymore these days, haven’t had one in almost 20 years. Technically my controller (Novation SLmkII) has DIN ports on it, not sure if that would count as a “MIDI Interface” for this scenario. And I’ve gotten rather spoiled by not having to deal with MIDI cables anymore, I really don’t want to go backwards. What a sad state of affairs.

I did go ahead and buy the Isotonik BCF script, but have not had time to install & configure it. Ironically, I’m too busy mixing! Ah life… lol

Hi Jonathan,
If you want to use the BCF as the ONLY controller for the standard mixing tasks (faders, mutes, solo, transport functions etc.) then there is a readily available setup within Live:
Go to Preferences/Link Midi/ and select BCF2000 as your control surface.

Daniel

I think Isotonik's template and/or preditor should help you out...
Or use it in CC mode and configure Ableton's remote controller script...

BCF2000 , It has a learning curve .

Re: [bc2000] Getting BCF to work in Ableton Live 9?

2017-05-05 by David Dexter

Hi again Jonathan, Don't give up on it yet. I only used it a few times but I plan on using it again. If you set up your Ableton project with effects and everything and then tweak the knobs you should find what each one does, they do all do something but it would be nice if they could be mapped to change the parameters that we want.
I plan on investigating further at some point but I have just been using the old curser and left clicking on my laptop to change things in recent months as I know I am going to need a bit of time to figure it out. If you happen to also use other controllers at the same time like an Akai apc or a midi keyboard you maybe able to see what parameters the behringer doesn't change and map the other controller for those things so you have full control just using your controllers.
