I'm also working on fitting an all-options VCO into frac-rack format... even on a 1 1/2 width panel, I'm having trouble fitting all the controls and jacks. any sketches of your proposed panel layout to share?

no not really ... basicly i was sticking to how grant from wiard lays his
out, on two panels ..with six knobs and a maximuin of 12 jack ... similar to
the waird , it has some distance between the jacks and controls
this is a good layout link
http://www.blacet.com/FPtyp.jpg

and this is the wiard page
http://www.wiard.com/

the noise ring has 8 jacks 2 rows of 4 , and plenty of space left when you
refer to the blacet layout you can see that 3 knobs will fit verticaly just
fine with plenty of room left for 3 rows of 4 jacks ...it will be a bit busy
with all of the patching but should be very functional

..... by the way, anyone know the BEST way to drill holes into a frack rack
panel ? i was thinking that a machine shop would do the trick but i do not
know what the cost would be

Hi Dustin
the 'best' way is probably different for everybody.
i get the impression you are planning a lot of panels = $$$ if you
pay someone to drill them.
i always print out my panel designs (done in FrontPanelDesigner),
tape the paper to the panel, use a centre punch to mark where the
holes will be (this stops the drill from going walkabout).
remove the paper, drill the holes with a small bit to start - 3mm or
4mm. a drill stand is best, but ive used hand-drills and cordless
drills with no problems (except sore wrists).
after all the small holes are done , i drill them out to the
appropriate sizes (usually 6.5mm for minijacks and 8mm for pots).
best to leave the biggest holes til last - less chance of error.
finally give the holes a gentle reaming to clean off any sharp edges.
then you have to think about how to label the panels...but thats
another day.

hope this helps.

pix of some of my panels are in photos - the garish ones.
cheers

IMHO the BEST way to drill holes is to pay someone to do it with a CNC
machine, that is, to use Front Panel Express if you're in the United States
or Schaeffer if you're in Europe. They fabricate finished panels from your
specifications. It's a very slick system: you download free software from
their site to design your panel, upload your file, and they mail you the
finished panel. It's not cheap, though; I do panels in MOTM format and they
typically run at least $40. On the other hand, for one-of-a-kind panels, the
quality of the end result is worth the expense, in my opinion. But maybe
other folks are better with a drill press than I am. :-)

The US site is at http://frontpanelexpress.com/ There are a couple of photos
of panels done from my designs at my website, http://www.studionebula.com .
I'm currently working on a combination CGS Digital Noise and a homebrew
sample and hold, which will share a panel. I'll post photos of that when
it's finished.

hi Adam
just a suggestion -
Steve Thomas charges about half of Schaeffer's prices
http://monopole.ph.qmul.ac.uk/~thomas/synthdiy/cnc.htm
you can just send him your FPD files.
