DIY and standards

DIY and standards

2005-04-14 by ed.j.wise

i was talking with my friend about synths. and the question came up
what are the standards ? and how do i mod my circuits to fit these
standards ? i know that their is a mod to make the CGS VCO a +/-5volt
output. but what about my other circuits that i am building ? i have a
paia 9700 filter. i am building a blacet processer mixer , from those
surplus boards ...i plan on adding a EG... and i have many other
things planned ... do i need a Oscope ? of just a multimeter ?is the
+/-5v the best option ? why or why not ? thoughts ?

It's not as important as you may think. Well designed gear often connects
together with no issues. I certainly mix a lot of brands with no issues.
Occasionaly a designer will lack foresight and do something stupid like
connecting a zener straight across an input, and onther will do something
stupid like not current limiting an output, and when the two are connected, zap.

I guess the most common "standards" are

+/- 5v for ac signals
0 to 5v (or 10v) for control signals
0 to 5v for trig and gate signals.

by the way, that is what the AC outputs are for on the original design. They
level shif the signal down to be symetrical about 0V. ATSO is the wave
shaper AC output while TSO is the one that sits up above 0V etc.

ok so , i can send a +/- 10v peak to peak signal through my audio mixer with
out and damage ? or do i just not understand what you are saying ?

No, those are modular synth standards. Audio signals tend to be 1v p2p.

Re: DIY and standards

I patch my 10V p-p synth outputs right into the line inputs on my mixer
without any problem. The inputs have a pad attenuator that I just turn
all the way down.
